SHRM-SCP Practice Tests: What SHRM's Samples, Previews and Prep Materials Offer, and What a Practice Score Can't Tell You

SHRM offers a few free retired SHRM-SCP items, half-length previews in its shop and a prep system with a practice exam, and says sample performance doesn't indicate exam performance. Here is what each option is, how to judge any other practice test, why 'real exam questions' are a risk, and how to use practice well.

Short answer

SHRM's own SHRM-SCP practice options are a few free sample questions, which it describes as real, retired exam items; two half-length SHRM-SCP Exam Previews ($189 each) and a situational judgment preview ($139) in SHRM's shop; and the Certification Prep System, which includes pretests, more than 2,700 practice questions and a practice exam with previously used items. SHRM says performance on sample questions doesn't indicate exam performance, and no practice score converts to SHRM's 120–200 scale. Use practice to find weak areas and build stamina, and avoid anything sold as real exam questions.

Search for a SHRM-SCP practice test and the results mix course marketplaces, free question banks of unknown origin, books written before the current BASK, and pages advertising "exam questions and answers." SHRM publishes its own practice options, and its handbook spells out what candidates may and may not study from. Here is what SHRM offers, what it says a practice score means, and how to judge everything else, as checked on October 27, 2026.

Sources: SHRM's SHRM-SCP practice questions page, the Exam Previews page, the exam preparation page and the 2026 handbook. Prices are as listed on SHRM's product pages on October 27, 2026, and can change, so check before you buy.

The product page for each SHRM-SCP half-length preview lists 67 questions: 18 foundational knowledge items, 42 knowledge items and 7 situational judgment items across three scenario sets, with one year of access. By Passy's arithmetic, scenarios are about 10% of a preview against 40% of the exam, so a preview is mostly knowledge practice. The situational judgment preview's page gives no question count, and SHRM's exam preparation page shows no Prep System prices in its text.

Two details are worth knowing. The Exam Previews page describes the previews as "designed from previous exams," and a SHRM article, SHRM Certification Best Test Practices, Part 4, whose page is dated April 17, 2024, says the study guide and the SHRM-SCP workbook contain SHRM-developed questions from prior exams, with the rationale, difficulty and BASK competency for each. And the same Exam Previews page still refers to "9 Behavioral Competencies," while the 2026 BASK has eight; when you buy any SHRM product, confirm it is the edition built on the 2026 BASK.

What SHRM says a practice score can and can't tell you

  • Sample questions don't predict your result. The handbook says performance on the sample questions is not indicative of performance on the SHRM-SCP. SHRM's practice questions page adds that they aren't scored and don't determine readiness. The previews' own FAQ says the same of preview scores: they shouldn't be read as a predictor of exam performance, and a score doesn't mean a content area has been mastered.
  • No practice percentage converts to SHRM's scale. SHRM reports results as scaled scores from 120 to 200, every pass is 200, and the standard is set with the Modified Angoff method. The SHRM-SCP pass rate guide explains why no percentage is published.
  • Previews are partly a level check. The Exam Previews page positions them to help you take the exam level that matches your daily work. SHRM's Eligibility Criteria page says 1 in 5 testers select the wrong exam based on their HR knowledge and experience, and points to the previews. SHRM's April 2024-dated article goes further: candidates who reported strategically aligned work had a 39% higher likelihood of passing the SHRM-SCP than those who reported operational work. That article also mentions remote-proctored testing, which SHRM's 2026 pages don't offer, so read its details as dated.
  • Retired is not live. The 2026 BASK says SHRM keeps a strict firewall between exam development and study-material development. Where SHRM's practice materials draw on real items, SHRM describes them as retired or previously used; the live exam stays separate.

Passy's reading of all this: treat a practice score as a diagnostic by area and a stamina check, not a forecast of your result.

Questions to ask about any other SHRM-SCP practice test

These checks are Passy's editorial suggestions, built on what SHRM publishes about the exam:

  1. Is it built on the 2026 BASK? Look for Inclusive Mindset, the 2026 weights (Leadership 19%, Business 17.5%, Interpersonal 13.5%, People 19%, Organization 18%, Workplace 13%) and the new AI content. A question count other than 134, a competency list without Inclusive Mindset, or Global & Cultural Effectiveness as a competency doesn't match the current exam.
  2. Is it written for the SCP level? Scenarios should put you in senior roles and reward the BASK's advanced indicators. A CP-level bank with an SCP label doesn't test the strategic lens.
  3. Does it match the exam's item mix? The real exam has 80 knowledge items and 54 situational judgment items, answered in two separately timed 110-minute sections.
  4. Is every answer explained? SHRM's 2023 article Knowledge vs. Situational Judgment Exam Questions says each of its knowledge items has a rationale tied to a documented, credible source. A practice item without a reason teaches less than one with it.
  5. Does it claim to contain real exam questions? That is the one claim that should end your interest, for the reason in the next section.

Apply the same checks to Passy's own material: planned SHRM-SCP prep built on the 2026 handbook weights and the 2026 BASK uses original senior-level items, none taken from SHRM exams, with an explanation for every answer. Checkout isn't open yet, so nothing can be bought today.

Why "SHRM-SCP exam questions and answers" PDFs are a risk

The Candidate Agreement in the 2026 handbook is a legally binding contract every applicant accepts. Among its terms:

  • No studying from confidential content. You agree not to possess, solicit, read, study from or otherwise use confidential information about SHRM certification exams during your preparation, and not to seek out live, confidential exam content from any source.
  • Topics count too. Prohibited acts include describing questions, identifying terms or concepts contained in exam questions, and reconstructing a list of topics on the test.
  • A duty to report. If you receive material you reasonably believe contains confidential SHRM exam content, or material represented to contain it, you agree to report it to shrmcertification@shrm.org.
  • Real consequences. SHRM uses data forensics to detect irregularities, potential test fraud and item harvesting, and may cancel or invalidate scores, revoke certification, or ban a candidate from testing for a fixed period or permanently.

SHRM's own retired samples and previews are released by SHRM for practice, which is a different matter. A file sold as "actual SHRM-SCP questions" is either false or a Candidate Agreement problem, and neither helps you pass.

A three-stage way to use SHRM-SCP practice

This sequence is Passy's editorial approach. It fits the 10-, 12- and 16-week plans in the SHRM-SCP study plan.

  1. Baseline, in week one. Take a short mixed set, such as SHRM's free samples and the free SHRM-SCP practice questions, and note which areas and which item types you miss. Don't compare the percentage with any pass line.
  2. Area practice, through the middle weeks. Practice one cluster or domain at a time, review every miss, and for scenarios write one sentence on why the best option beats the runner-up. The SHRM-SCP situational judgment guide and the SHRM-SCP knowledge items guide explain how to review each type.
  3. Full-length rehearsal, in the last weeks. Sit at least one complete run of 134 questions in two 110-minute sections, with no notes and any break taken with the clock running, as on test day. That pace works out to about 98 seconds a question by Passy's arithmetic, the figure SHRM's 2024-dated article also gives. Then review by area, not by total score.

For stage 3, one timed 134-question sitting planned for full SHRM-SCP prep runs 3 hours 40 minutes and is scored at the end. It is described as one sitting rather than two separately timed sections, so mark the halfway point yourself if you want to rehearse the section change. Any honest full-length set of original questions under real timing does the same job.

Your next SHRM-SCP practice set

Start with stage 1 today: SHRM's free samples, then Passy's free set of 20, which includes eight senior-leader scenarios, two foundational knowledge items and ten HR knowledge items. Log every miss by area, and enter your exam date in the free SHRM-SCP study planner so the rehearsal weeks are protected in your calendar.

When you move to stage 2, practice sets by cluster and domain in planned SHRM-SCP prep follow SHRM's six areas, and the SHRM-SCP pass rate guide explains what SHRM's own numbers can and can't tell you about readiness.
