Does AWS Cloud Practitioner Expire? CLF-C02 Renewal Options, Timing Windows and Costs

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner lasts three years from the day you pass. See the four ways AWS lets you renew it, when each one opens, what each costs with and without the 50% voucher, and why retaking CLF-C02 is not possible in your first two years.

Short answer

Yes. AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is valid for three years from the date you pass. While it is still active, you can renew it in four ways: complete the free AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner game in the last six months before it expires, pass the latest version of the Cloud Practitioner exam (not within two years of your pass unless AWS releases a new exam code), or pass any Associate-level or Professional-level exam. Each route adds three years from the day you complete it, and your 50% voucher can be used toward a renewal exam. Cloud Practitioner has no one-year maintenance option.

AWS's Certification Program Agreement sets the clock: each AWS Certification "is valid for a period of three (3) years following the date on which you successfully pass" the exam, unless you extend it through recertification. AWS's FAQ puts it more simply: you will be required to recertify every three years. What makes renewal confusing is not the three years but the timing rules around each way to renew, all of which come from AWS's Recertification page and policies, as checked on October 27, 2026.

The four ways to renew AWS Cloud Practitioner

RouteWhen you can use itCostValidity added
AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud PractitionerWhen your certification is due to expire within 6 monthsFree3 years from completion
Pass the latest version of the Cloud Practitioner examNot within two years of your pass, unless a new exam code is releasedExam fee; the 50% voucher can be used3 years from completion
Pass any Associate-level examAny time while your certification is activeExam fee; the 50% voucher can be used3 years from completion
Pass any Professional-level examAny time while your certification is activeExam fee; the 50% voucher can be used3 years from completion

Two rules apply to all four. AWS says your "certification must be active to renew," and that for every recertification option, time "is extended based on the date of completion of that recertification action." Renewing early does not stack the new three years on top of what is left; it restarts the three years from the day you finish.

Why the "retake CLF-C02" route opens late

AWS's After Testing policy says that once you have passed an exam, "you will not be able to retake the same exam for two years," unless the exam has been updated with a new exam guide and exam series code. For a Cloud Practitioner holder, that means renewing by retaking CLF-C02 is only possible in the third year of your certification, unless AWS releases a successor with a new code first. As of October 27, 2026, AWS had announced no successor to CLF-C02.

Here is how the windows line up for someone who passes on November 16, 2026. The dates are Passy's arithmetic; check the exact dates on your own certification record before you plan around them:

From aboutWhat opens
November 16, 2026Certified. Any Associate or Professional exam can renew Cloud Practitioner from now on
November 16, 2028Two years after the pass: retaking CLF-C02 becomes possible
May 16, 2029Six months before expiry: the free Cloud Quest renewal becomes available
November 16, 2029Three years after the pass: expiry, unless renewed

AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner, step by step

This is the only free route, and it involves no exam. The Skill Builder course page describes it as "an exam-free recertification path" for Cloud Practitioners whose certification expires within six months, and lists its access as Free. The steps it gives:

  1. Launch AWS Cloud Quest and select the recertification role.
  2. Enter your candidate ID, which is in your AWS Certification Account.
  3. Complete the hands-on solution-building assignments in the Recertify Cloud Practitioner role.
  4. Choose the claim button to submit your renewal to your AWS Certification Account.

AWS says completion renews Cloud Practitioner for three years from the completion date and also earns the AWS Cloud Quest: Cloud Practitioner badge. The page lists the course at 13 hours and gives an average completion time of 10 to 12 hours, self-paced. It counts the assignments as 12 in one place and 13 in another; either way, plan for a couple of weeks of evenings rather than one sitting.

AWS's own pages also disagree about the price. The Cloud Practitioner certification page still says this option is "free during the beta period which concludes the end of July 2025," while the Recertification page and the Skill Builder course page both list it as Free. The two newer listings agree, but confirm the price shown when you enroll.

Renewing AWS Cloud Practitioner with an Associate or Professional exam

AWS lists passing "any one of the Associate-level exams" or "any one of the Professional-level exams" as renewal options, with three years added from the date you pass. This route can do two jobs at once: you earn the new certification, and your Cloud Practitioner credential renews from the same date.

One detail matters if you also hold AI Practitioner. AWS's table renews AI Practitioner only through the latest AI Practitioner exam, the Machine Learning Engineer – Associate exam or the Generative AI Developer – Professional exam. So the Machine Learning Engineer – Associate or Generative AI Developer – Professional exam renews both foundational certifications, while any other Associate or Professional exam renews Cloud Practitioner only.

If you are deciding which higher exam to take, the first AWS certification guide compares CLF-C02 with AI Practitioner and Solutions Architect – Associate.

What each AWS Cloud Practitioner renewal costs

AWS's FAQ lists Foundational exams at 100 USD, Associate at 150 USD and Professional at 300 USD, and its benefits page gives certified individuals a 50% discount voucher "to apply toward recertification or any other exam." The Recertification page confirms that each exam route "can be taken using the 50% discount voucher." Passy's arithmetic, in USD before taxes:

RouteFull priceWith the 50% voucher
Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner$0Not needed
Latest Cloud Practitioner exam$100$50
An Associate-level exam$150$75
A Professional-level exam$300$150

The AWS Cloud Practitioner exam cost guide explains how the voucher works, including that its validity period isn't stated on the AWS pages checked. If you choose to renew by exam, a short refresher can be enough, and you can check the planned 30-day access option for a CLF-C02 refresher once full prep launches.

"Maintain" vs "renew": why Cloud Practitioner has only renewal

AWS's Recertification page describes two actions. Renewal adds three years. Maintenance adds one year, through activities on AWS Skill Builder, and requires an active certification within 90 days of expiration plus a paid Skill Builder subscription. AWS lists maintenance for several Associate, Professional and Specialty certifications, but not for Cloud Practitioner. If you read about "maintaining" an AWS certification for a year, it does not apply to this one.

If your Cloud Practitioner certification has already expired

Every renewal route on AWS's page requires the certification to be active. The AWS pages checked for this guide describe no way to renew an expired credential, so plan as if you will need to pass a qualifying exam again. The two-year retake bar no longer matters once that much time has passed: it counts from your pass, which was at least three years earlier.

Without an active certification, the 50% voucher may not be available either. AWS's agreement grants benefits to people who "hold one or more active AWS Credentials," so check your AWS Certification Account before you count on it.

Choosing your renewal route

A practical way to decide, which is Passy's editorial advice:

  • You're aiming for an Associate certification anyway: take it any time before expiry. It renews Cloud Practitioner and adds a credential.
  • You want to renew for free and have time in the last six months: use Cloud Quest. Put the window's start date in your calendar now.
  • You want the exam route without a higher-level exam: retake the latest Cloud Practitioner exam in your third year, using the voucher.
  • Your expiry is weeks away: check your expiry date in your AWS Certification Account before you buy anything. You are inside the six-month Cloud Quest window, and AWS puts its average completion time at 10 to 12 hours.

If you'll sit CLF-C02 again, the content may have moved since you passed. AWS publishes exam guide revisions in the CLF-C02 exam guide, so reread the task statements and the in-scope list first, then rebuild recall, for example by reviewing with the 460 CLF-C02 flashcards planned for launch.

Booking works the same as the first time; the CLF-C02 scheduling guide covers the account, ID and delivery rules, and Passy's free CLF-C02 study planner can lay out the weeks before your renewal date.

Close to the date, you can run through the planned Test Day checklist for a renewal sitting once full prep opens.
