Is CompTIA Security+ Worth It?
Decide whether SY0-701 serves a specific job goal, using what the credential can prove and two dated public postings.
Short answer
Security+ can show that you passed a broad SY0-701 exam. It cannot prove you have done the job. It is worth pursuing when a role you want lists it as required or clearly preferred and you can afford the voucher and the study time. It is a weak reason to buy a voucher when you already meet the requirement, or when you have not yet decided which job you are aiming at. The retail figure CompTIA published is on the cost guide, not repeated here as a second price list.
What passing demonstrates
A passing result means you met CompTIA’s scaled score on that form. It does not show years of incident work, a clearance, or that an employer will hire you. Occupational wages are not “Security+ salaries.” This page does not quote them.
The price of the exam changes by channel and date. Use the cost guide for the dated retail figure CompTIA published and for what a voucher does and does not include. Do not keep a second price table here.
Two public examples, not a market
These are single US federal announcements, checked on October 3, 2026. Both were already closed. They illustrate how a posting can treat the credential. They are not a hiring rate.
The Air National Guard announcement 866588300, an IT specialist role at the 102nd Intelligence Wing in Massachusetts, opened April 24, 2026 and closed May 24, 2026. It said CompTIA Security+ was mandatory for that level, and that the candidate must hold a current certification or obtain it within nine months of appointment. The posted pay range was the job’s GS pay, not a return created by the exam.
The Postal Regulatory Commission announcement 867566800, an IT specialist role in Washington, DC, listed dates May 1, 2026 to May 15, 2026. It said relevant certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, or Microsoft certifications were preferred. Preferred is not mandatory. Another certification on that list could satisfy the sentence as written.
A different announcement may still cite an older Defense Department manual. Do not treat one closed posting as current department policy. Read the posting you are actually applying to.
A worksheet
Fill the row that matches you. The next action is a study choice, not a prediction.
| Role | Evidence | Skills now | Missing proof | Time and money | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Career changer | A posting names it | Check may be thin | Exam, or networking | Voucher plus study | Close the thin skill first |
| Working in IT | Someone who hires you asked | The daily work | The credential | One exam cycle | Prepare only if asked |
| Employer-required | Offer names it and a date | Varies | That deadline | The date sets the pace | Prepare for the named exam |
| Already specialized | A contract still names it | Work is ahead of SY0-701 | Usually nothing | Opportunity cost | Skip it unless a clause asks |
Buying a course today is unnecessary when the next action is “you do not need this credential for the goal you wrote down.” Practice and a study plan are still free on this site if you do decide to sit. Set a date only after that decision. The plan does not estimate a salary and does not move into the app.
