HESI A2 Biology: What to Study
Elsevier’s HESI A2 Biology exam covers water, biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular functions, and photosynthesis. Confirm your program assigned Biology before you build a cell-biology calendar.
Short answer
HESI A2 Biology is one of Elsevier’s seven academic exams. Elsevier describes it as covering water, biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular functions, and photosynthesis, with 25 scored items and about 25 minutes when administered. Many programs omit it. Study Biology only if your current admissions list includes it, and do not treat unofficial “most tested” biology topics as official statistics.
Skip this exam if the school skipped it
Biology is real in Elsevier’s seven-exam map and in the current sixth-edition review book. It is also optional at the program level. Practice HESI A2 cell and molecule items in Passy only after Biology is on the assigned list.
Studying someone else’s Biology stack while your school required only English Language, Math, and A&P is how candidates run out of weeks.
Stay inside Elsevier’s published Biology description
Use the publisher’s own topic list as the outline:
- water in living systems
- biological molecules
- metabolism
- cells and cellular functions
- photosynthesis
That is first-year academic biology, not a nursing process exam and not a genetics research course. If a review chapter wanders into advanced pathways, ask whether the paragraph still maps to those headings.
Passy’s original mitochondrion/ATP item is a cellular-function teaching example. It is not a recalled HESI question and it does not imply item frequency.
How to review in a short science window
Elsevier estimates about 25 minutes for 25 scored Biology items when the exam is given. The study implication is fluency, not a term-paper.
- Sketch a cell and name the job of four organelles.
- Distinguish the major macromolecule types by function.
- State what photosynthesis and cellular respiration each accomplish at a one-sentence level.
- Answer a small original set and tag misses.
Check those Biology ideas in mixed HESI A2 practice in Passy if Chemistry or A&P is also assigned, so you do not confuse the three science exams.
Chemistry is matter, the periodic table, equations, reactions, and bonding. A&P is terminology, structures, and systems. The cluster is what is on the HESI A2. Sequence them with the study guide.
If Biology is assigned and weak, repair the cell-function misses in Passy.
An unread introductory textbook will not replace a short, assigned-exam loop.
When the science subset is confirmed, keep Biology inside that HESI A2 plan in Passy rather than adding an entire introductory textbook you will not finish.
