How Many Questions Are on the NCLEX-PN?

85 minimum, 150 maximum, after the 2026 PN plan

The current NCLEX-PN Test Plan sets a minimum of 85 items and a maximum of 150. That replaced older PN maximums you may still see on outdated blogs (including 205). Practice deciding each PN item without watching a fake running count → as if CAT were a paper test you could pace like a quiz.

Every exam includes 15 unscored pretest items. You will not be told which 15 those are. Treat every item as if it counts.

How 85 can include case studies

The 2026 PN Test Plan places 18 clinical-judgment case-study items on the exam (three case studies of six items). A minimum-length exam still has to include that case-study structure plus pretest items and other content items. Do not expect “85 easy multiple-choice only.”

Stand-alone clinical-judgment items are described as about 10% depending on exam length. NCLEX-PN NGN case studies covers how those items behave.

Length is a CAT decision, not a grade

After you reach the minimum, the exam can stop when the ability estimate is clearly above or below the passing standard, continue while the estimate is close, or continue to the maximum. Details of stopping rules belong with scoring, not with a superstition about lucky numbers.

• Stopped at 85 — not proof of a pass.
• Reached 150 — not proof of a fail.

Read each rationale as if the item were scored → because you cannot identify pretest items in the room.

Time is separate from item count

You have up to five hours for the NCLEX-PN, including the introduction and breaks. A short exam can still use a large share of the clock if you are slow. A long exam can still finish with time remaining. How long is the NCLEX-PN? is the timing page.

Do not build a study goal of “I will finish at 85.” That is not a skill. The skill is a safe LPN/VN action on the item in front of you.

What to do with this number in prep

Use 85–150 only as a format fact:

• You cannot plan a fixed number of “points.”
• You should practice moving on from an item you are unsure about.
• You should know case studies will consume several items as a set.
