Got 150 Questions on the NCLEX-PN? What It Actually Means

150 is the current PN maximum, not an automatic fail

Under the 2026 NCLEX-PN Test Plan the exam can go to 150 items. Older blogs still quote a higher PN maximum. If your test went to 150 in the current cycle, you hit today’s cap. While you wait, do not treat unofficial card tricks as a result →.

A maximum-length exam often means the ability estimate stayed close to the passing standard for a long time. Close can still be above −0.18 logits. Close can still be below it. You cannot see which.

What 150 does not tell you

• It does not prove you failed.
• It does not prove you passed.
• It does not mean you got every pretest item.
• It does not mean the last item was “the deciding one” in a way you can decode.

Stopped at 85 is the opposite anxiety. Same rule: length is not a result.

After a max-length sitting

Use authorized channels only:

• NCLEX-PN Quick Results after two business days in participating U.S. jurisdictions. Unofficial. Not a license to practice.
• Official result from your NRB.
• If the official result is fail, the Candidate Performance Report becomes the study document, and failed NCLEX-PN is the recovery sequence.

If you have not tested yet

Do not train to “avoid 150.” You cannot. Train to keep making LPN/VN-safe choices when you are tired. The five-hour clock still includes breaks on a long exam—how long is the NCLEX-PN.
