NCLEX-PN Stopped at 85 Questions: Does It Mean You Passed?
If the NCLEX-PN stops at 85 items, the computer had enough information to make a pass/fail decision. Item count alone does not prove you passed or failed.
Short answer
If the NCLEX-PN stops at 85 questions, you reached the minimum item count and the computerized adaptive test had enough information to decide pass or fail. You can pass at 85. You can fail at 85. Wait for unofficial Quick Results if your U.S. jurisdiction participates, and treat only your nursing regulatory body’s result as official.
85 is the minimum, not a secret pass code
The current NCLEX-PN can deliver 85 to 150 items. After you reach 85, the computer may stop because it is confident your ability estimate is clearly above or clearly below the −0.18 logit passing standard. If you are still waiting, read Quick Results rules instead of rerunning unofficial tricks.
You cannot see the ability estimate. Perceived last-item difficulty is not a reliable DIY result.
What you should do in the next 48 hours
- Do not pay for unofficial “hacks” that try to infer a result from a payment card. They are not NCSBN result channels.
- If you tested for a participating U.S. NRB, NCLEX-PN Quick Results may be available after two business days. Unofficial results do not authorize practice.
- Official results come from your NRB, not from Pearson’s unofficial screen and not from a forum vote.

Why people think 85 means they passed
Forums often claim “hard questions at the end means pass.” CAT selects items near your current estimate. A hard-feeling item can appear on either side of the standard. Case-study blocks also change how “hard” feels without revealing the logit.

Do not study to “shut off at 85.” That is not a skill. Study Coordinated Care, safety, and medication parameters so each item is a defensible LPN/VN action. How many questions is the format page.
