How Long Is the NCLEX-PN? Time Limit and Breaks Explained

Five hours on the clock, including breaks

The Candidate Bulletin gives up to five hours for the NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN. That total includes the introductory screen and all breaks. Keep PN prep pointed at decisions you can finish without stalling → so the clock is not the first time you practice moving on.

You will not get extra time because your exam continues toward 150 items. You also do not get a refund of time if you finish at 85.

When the optional scheduled breaks appear

The bulletin states you will be offered a scheduled break after about two hours, and again after about three and a half hours. On-screen instructions appear at those points. If you take a break—scheduled or unscheduled—you leave the testing room. The exam clock keeps running.

That is why a long restroom break near the end of a maximum-length exam is a real risk. It is also why you should not skip hydration all morning and then take a 25-minute unscheduled break at item 80.

Item count and minutes are not the same story

How many questions are on the NCLEX-PN? is 85–150. A candidate can:

• Finish near 85 with an hour left.
• Finish near 85 with little time left.
• Reach 150 with time remaining.
• Run low on time before the maximum (run-out-of-time rules are official CAT policy, not a forum myth—confirm them in the current Test Plan/Bulletin before exam day).

Stopped at 85 and 150 questions are result-anxiety pages. Neither converts leftover minutes into a pass.

How to practice the clock without fake CAT software

You do not need a perfect simulator to respect five hours:

• Practice reading the stem once, choosing, and moving on.
• Practice a case-study set without checking your phone between the six items.
• Decide now whether you will take the first scheduled break if you feel sharp.
