SAFE MLO Test Day: Check-In, ID, What Prometric Provides and the Break Rules
On SAFE MLO test day you need one current government-issued photo ID with a signature that matches your NMLS name, and almost nothing else. Here's what Prometric provides, what goes in the locker, how the 225-minute appointment runs, how breaks work (and where NMLS and Prometric word the locker rule differently), online testing for accommodation candidates, and what happens when you finish.
Short answer
Bring one current, government-issued ID with your photo and signature, with your name exactly as it appears in NMLS; Prometric doesn't accept photocopies. Everything else goes in a locker: no phone, watch, wallet, food or drink in the testing room. Prometric provides a basic calculator and an erasable note board. The appointment lasts 225 minutes: a tutorial and optional survey plus 190 minutes of test time. Restroom breaks are allowed, but the clock keeps running. In most cases your result appears on screen, and you leave with a printed score report.
Test day for the SAFE MLO is mostly about removing surprises. The rules come from two places: NMLS's testing FAQ and handbook, and Prometric's NMLS page. The handbook's own test-day chapters (7.0 Test Day and 8.0 Test Center Policies) couldn't be read for this guide, so the details below come from NMLS's testing FAQ (the latest archived copy, from October 2025), the handbook's specifications chapter, and Prometric's NMLS page as it read on October 28, 2026. Check NMLS's pages again in the week before you test.
What to bring to the SAFE MLO Test
- One ID. NMLS's FAQ asks for one current, non-expired, government-issued identification with your photograph and signature, and your name must match your NMLS account exactly. Prometric adds that photocopies or faxes of ID, or of name-change documents, aren't accepted. The SAFE MLO registration guide covers fixing a name mismatch in advance
- Approved accommodations, already in place. Prometric says that any request to bring personal belongings such as prescription or non-prescription medication or medical devices into the testing room must be approved before you schedule
- Little else. Anything you bring that isn't worn has to go in a locker
If you'd like these points in one place on the morning itself, full prep planned for launch includes a calm Test Day checklist.
What's allowed in the SAFE MLO testing room
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Calculator | Provided at the center: NMLS describes a basic four-function calculator, Prometric a non-programmable, non-printing one. You can't bring your own |
| Scratch paper | Provided as an erasable note board (NMLS calls it a whiteboard) and pens, returned at the end |
| Phone, watch, wallet, purse, hat, coat, non-medical electronics | Not allowed; stored in your assigned locker |
| Pens of your own | Not allowed; Prometric lists pens among personal items |
| Food and drink, including coffee and water | Not allowed in the testing room |
| Religious items such as head coverings or rosary beads | Allowed after visual inspection; they must stay on throughout, and removed items go in the locker |
| Medication or medical devices | Only with approval obtained before scheduling |
How the SAFE MLO appointment runs
NMLS's handbook schedules 225 minutes: 190 minutes of test time plus 30–35 minutes for a tutorial and an optional survey. Prometric's page says you'll be asked to read and agree to NMLS's Rules of Conduct for Test Takers before you start, in addition to the Candidate Confidentiality & Test Security Agreement you accepted when you enrolled.
Pieced together from the two sources (neither published page gives the exact screen-by-screen order), the visit looks like this:
- Check in with your ID; personal items go in the locker
- Enter the testing room: Prometric hands out the erasable note board and pens on admittance, and you ask the staff for the calculator
- Before the test starts: the Rules of Conduct agreement and the tutorial (the tutorial is part of the extra 30–35 minutes)
- The test: 120 multiple-choice questions, 115 of them scored, in 190 minutes, which is about 95 seconds a question
- When you finish: the optional survey and, in most cases, your result on screen
The handbook's test-day chapter also covers check-in procedures, security and test navigation in more detail; that chapter wasn't readable for this guide, so read it on the NMLS Resource Center before your date. If you want to know how the 190 minutes feel before the real thing, rehearse the 3-hour-10-minute sitting with the planned mock exam.
Breaks during the SAFE MLO Test
Both NMLS and Prometric agree on the main points: restroom breaks are allowed, the test clock keeps running, and you may go only to the restroom, not leave the building. Where they differ is the locker:
- NMLS's FAQ: candidates are not allowed to access their lockers while on break
- Prometric's NMLS page (unchanged on October 28, 2026): if you need an item stored in the locker during an unscheduled break, "such as food or medicine," you must notify test center staff before retrieving it, and you may not access other personal items
Because the two versions differ, don't count on reaching your locker mid-test. If you may need medication or food during the test, ask the test center staff at check-in, and for anything you need in the room itself, request approval through NMLS's accommodations process before you schedule. Plan your pacing as though any break costs you minutes.
Online testing and accommodations on test day
Prometric's NMLS page says that since October 1, 2024, online proctored testing has been available only to candidates who qualify for testing accommodations. If you test that way:
- No physical calculator or scratch paper: a four-function calculator and a scratch pad appear on screen
- You must meet Prometric's system and testing-room requirements, set out in its ProProctor user guide
- Breaks are allowed with the clock running; you notify the proctor, you get a security check when you return, and you may not use study materials, make calls or use electronic media during the break
Accommodation requests go to NMLS's accommodations team before you schedule. Prometric's page gives the number as 1-877-416-6657, option 2, and NMLS's FAQ says reasonable accommodations are provided, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, to candidates who meet the criteria in handbook chapter 5.0.
When you finish the SAFE MLO Test
NMLS's FAQ says the test is scored electronically. In most cases your score and pass or fail result appear on screen when you finish, and the test center administrator gives you a printed score report before you leave. About 72 hours later, NMLS posts the official score and result in the Testing Information section of your record's Composite View. The SAFE MLO passing score guide explains what the number means, and if it falls short, the free SAFE MLO retake planner maps the 30- or 180-day wait.
If something goes wrong before your SAFE MLO appointment
- You're sick or can't make it. Reschedule through Prometric's website or phone line (1-877-671-6657), not the test center: Prometric says individual testing sites can't schedule, reschedule or cancel. NMLS's FAQ sets the deadline at 11:59 p.m. Eastern two business days before the appointment, while Prometric's page says two calendar days; go by the earlier of the two
- You miss it or change too late. Both sources say the enrollment window closes; NMLS adds that the fee is lost, and you'd pay for a new enrollment window before booking again
- Bad weather. NMLS's handbook chapter 4.0 covers weather cancellations and complimentary test enrollments, and Prometric posts test center closures on its site; check both before you set out
A SAFE MLO test-day checklist
- ID checked: current, government-issued, photo and signature, name exactly as in NMLS
- Appointment confirmation and test center address saved; travel time planned with a margin
- Any accommodation or medication approval confirmed in writing before the day
- Phone, watch and wallet ready to go straight into the locker
- A pacing plan: about 63 minutes per 40 questions (a Passy rule of thumb), with breaks counted against it
- The reschedule deadline noted, in case you wake up sick
A practical approach for the final week is a short daily review rather than one long session. The SAFE MLO practice test guide explains how to run a last timed rehearsal, and for the days after it, full prep planned for launch adds Cram planning for your last few days.
