How Long Is the PTCB Exam? PTCE Time Limit Explained
PTCE testing time is 1 hour 50 minutes. PTCB also asks you to commit about two hours including a 5-minute tutorial and a 5-minute survey. Arrive 30 minutes early at Pearson.
Short answer
PTCE testing time is 1 hour 50 minutes. PTCB tells candidates to commit about two hours for the appointment: a 5-minute tutorial, the 1 hour 50 minute exam, and a 5-minute post-exam survey. Arrive at the Pearson test center 30 minutes before the appointment. The 110-minute exam clock and the two-hour visit are different numbers. Do not treat them as one.
110 minutes on the exam. About two hours in the seat.
PTCB’s CPhT page asks you to commit 2 hours for the exam: a 5-minute tutorial, a 1 hour 50 minute exam, and a 5-minute post-exam survey. Practice PTCE items in Passy against that 110-minute testing clock, not against a vague “two-hour test” label that mixes tutorial and survey into the item timer.
Those pieces:
| Segment | Time |
|---|---|
| Tutorial | 5 minutes |
| PTCE items | 1 hour 50 minutes |
| Post-exam survey | 5 minutes |
| Planned on-site testing block | about 2 hours |
| Arrival | 30 minutes before the appointment |
The arrival window is extra. It is not part of the 110-minute exam clock.
Why blogs collapse the numbers
“Two hours” is the appointment PTCB tells you to plan. “1 hour 50 minutes” is the time you have for 90 questions. If you study as if you had 120 minutes for items, you will overestimate the clock. If you ignore tutorial and survey, you will underestimate how long you are in the center.
How many questions are on the PTCB exam? is 90 items, including 10 unidentified unscored questions. Dividing 110 minutes by 90 is a little more than a minute per item if you use the whole exam clock. Multi-step calculations will take more. Simple classification items should take less.
PTCB pharmacy math is the usual place candidates bleed time. Work calculation setups in Passy until the proportion is automatic, then return to mixed items so math does not consume the whole clock.
What does not add extra exam minutes
PTCB Help Center calculator guidance describes an on-screen calculator. Using it takes part of the same 110 minutes. It does not pause the clock. Personal calculators are not the default tool.
Current PTCE delivery is in person at Pearson. Can you take the PTCB exam online? is the delivery page. It does not change the 1 hour 50 minute exam length.
PTCB exam day covers check-in. Identification and lockers happen before the tutorial. They need the 30-minute early arrival, not a slice of the item clock.
Keep PTCE pacing honest in Passy by practicing moving on from a slow item.
A days-supply item that stalls still counts against the same 110 minutes.
Finish a short mixed PTCE set in Passy after you can leave a slow calculation without freezing.
