PTCB Eligibility Requirements: Who Can Take the PTCE?
PTCE eligibility currently requires U.S. residence plus Pathway 1 (PTCB-recognized education/training) or Pathway 2 (at least 500 hours of pharmacy technician work experience complete at application), disclosures, policy compliance, and a passing PTCE.
Short answer
To sit the PTCE for CPhT certification, PTCB currently requires that you reside in the United States or its territories, complete one of two pathways, fully disclose criminal and State Board of Pharmacy actions, comply with PTCB certification policies, and pass the PTCE. Pathway 1 is a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program, or completion within 60 days of application. A pharmacy degree is acceptable in lieu of a recognized technician program. Pathway 2 is equivalent work experience as a pharmacy technician, currently a minimum of 500 hours, complete at the time of application.

PTCB’s CPhT page lists eligibility in two education-or-experience pathways, plus residence, disclosures, policy compliance, and a passing PTCE. Start PTCE study on the current outline in Passy while you confirm which pathway you actually meet. Do not wait for Pearson to begin Domain 1 review.
Passing the PTCE does not mean every State Board of Pharmacy has licensed you to practice. PTCB states that the legal scope of practice for CPhTs is defined by individual State Boards of Pharmacy. Check that board before you tell an employer you are “licensed everywhere.”
Pathway 1 — recognized education or training
Pathway 1 is a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program, or completion of that program within 60 days of application submission. PTCB also says a pharmacy degree is acceptable in lieu of a recognized pharmacy technician training/education program.
Use PTCB’s published list of recognized programs. A random certificate that is not on that list is not automatically Pathway 1.
Pathway 2 — work experience
Pathway 2 is equivalent work experience as a pharmacy technician, currently a minimum of 500 hours. PTCB states those 500 hours must be complete at the time of application. You cannot apply on a promise to finish the hours later.
This path exists for experienced technicians who were not in a position to attend a PTCB-recognized program. It is not a shortcut around disclosures or the exam.
Disclosures and policies still apply
Both pathways still require full disclosure of criminal and State Board of Pharmacy registration or licensure actions, and compliance with applicable PTCB certification policies. Eligibility is not only a transcript or a timesheet.

Keep mixed PTCE practice going in Passy while applications are in review. Authorization to schedule is not extra study time you should waste.
A recognized program or 500 hours gets you to the application. It does not replace the four-domain outline.
PTCB / PTCE study guide is the content plan once eligibility is real. Put current-domain items into practice in Passy instead of collecting more PDFs than you will read.
The exam still uses the January 2026 outline regardless of how you qualified.
