How to Apply for and Schedule the PTCB Exam

Create a PTCB Account, apply for CPhT certification, wait for authorization, then schedule the PTCE at a Pearson test center within the 90-day authorization period. Changes are free up to 24 hours before the appointment.

Short answer

PTCB’s current apply-and-schedule sequence is: create a PTCB Account, apply for CPhT certification, wait for application approval and an authorization-to-schedule email, then book a Pearson appointment. The PTCE is taken in person at Pearson test centers. The authorization-to-schedule period is 90 days; you can extend it up to two times for a $20 fee each if you ask before it ends, and if it lapses you forfeit the fees and must reapply. Testing accommodations must be requested during application and, if approved, scheduled through Pearson’s accommodations line.

Account, apply, authorize, then Pearson

PTCB’s CPhT page lists three application steps: create a PTCB Account, apply for certification inside that account, then wait for an email with authorization to schedule. Turn the wait for approval into a study plan in the Passy PTCB prep app instead of treating it as a pause button.

Once the application is approved, you are authorized to schedule. Pearson’s PTCB page and PTCB’s Guidebook both put the authorization-to-schedule period at 90 days.

The application checklist

  1. Confirm that you meet a pathway: a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program, or at least 500 hours of pharmacy technician work experience completed by the time you apply.
  2. Create a PTCB Account using your legal name exactly as it appears on the photo ID you will bring on exam day.
  3. Apply for CPhT certification inside the account, answer the disclosure questions, and pay the $129 fee.
  4. If you need testing accommodations, request them during the application and submit the completed request form within 30 days of applying.
  5. Wait for approval and the email that authorizes you to schedule.
  6. Book a Pearson test-center appointment inside the 90-day authorization period, online or by phone.

If the 90-day window is tight

PTCB’s Guidebook lets you extend the authorization period by another 90 days through your PTCB Account. Each extension costs a nonrefundable $20, you are limited to two, and you must request one before the current period ends. If the authorization expires without an exam, you forfeit all fees and must reapply.

Rescheduling and canceling a test-center appointment are free if you do it at least 24 hours before the appointment, either under My Scheduled Exam in the PTCB Account or by calling Pearson. For a Monday appointment changed by phone, PTCB says to call by 7:00 PM CT the Friday before. A no-show forfeits all fees. To withdraw instead, do it on or before the last day of the authorization period to qualify for a refund, minus an administrative fee.

Schedule the exam you will actually sit

Current PTCE delivery is in person. PTCB says the exam is administered at more than 1,400 Pearson test centers, including more than 100 military bases. Can you take the PTCB exam online? is the delivery article. Do not book an OnVUE session for the PTCE based on a 2020 news post.

Pearson says you may schedule online or by phone, and that online is the most convenient method. Candidates with approved testing accommodations currently must call Pearson’s Accommodations Hotline to schedule. PTCB says accommodations that are reasonable and consistent with the ADA are provided at no additional cost, and that you request them during application. Once a date is on the calendar, focus on your weakest PTCE domain in the Passy PTCE prep app.

Confirm eligibility and fee before you checkout

PTCB eligibility requirements is the pathway page. How much does the PTCB exam cost? is the current $129 figure, which you should re-check live.

PTCB exam day is what happens after you have a date: 30-minute early arrival, identification that matches the PTCB Account, and an in-person proctor.

Work mixed practice questions in the Passy PTCB prep app as soon as the authorization email exists so the 90-day window is not empty calendar.

Name and ID matching is a scheduling problem as well as an exam-day problem. If your legal name will change, fix the PTCB Account before you book. Pearson will not treat a nickname mismatch as a study issue.

The useful next step is still the 2026 outline: keep one current-domain block moving in the Passy prep app for the PTCB exam while you compare center dates.
