How Many Questions Are on the RBT Exam in 2026?

85 items, and ten of them do not count

The current RBT examination contains 85 multiple-choice items, and ten of those items do not count toward the result. Pace a mixed technician set as if every item counts →, because you will not see a “this one is a pilot” flag on the screen. The 75 scored questions are the ones BACB uses for the pass/fail decision. The 10 unscored questions are there to try out future items.

Each item has four options and one correct answer. The examination is offered in English. The time limit is 90 minutes.

This is a fixed-length test. It does not shorten or lengthen based on performance the way some nursing or EMS exams do. Finishing all 85 questions is the design, not a signal.

How the 75 scored items are distributed

The RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) publishes how those 75 scored items split:

Those counts are the study map. They are not a promise about the order you will see on test day. Items from different domains are mixed. Pilots are mixed. You cannot skip “the ethics section” as a block.

What 90 minutes implies for pacing

Eighty-five items in 90 minutes is roughly a minute per question if you use the full session. Some items will take less. A scenario with several details may take more. The useful rehearsal is not a stopwatch on the first study day. It is accurate classification first, then a later timed mixed block so the clock is familiar.

You may review and change answers if the testing software and remaining time allow. Do not count on a generous review period if you spent two minutes on early items. The exam-day guide covers check-in and what happens in the Pearson VUE room. Those minutes are not part of the 90-minute exam clock.

Leaving items blank is a poor strategy on a four-option test. There is no extra penalty beyond being wrong, and a blank cannot be correct. Because pilots are unidentified, skipping a “weird” item might skip a scored one.

When timing starts to crowd accuracy, rehearse committing to the best-supported option and moving on → instead of adding an untimed dump of extra questions.

What the item count does not tell you

The number 85 does not tell you the passing standard. BACB reports pass/fail, not a public raw score that applies to every form. Equating exists because forms are not identical. The passing-score guide owns that explanation.

Third-party pages sometimes still quote different totals from older administrations or from other BACB examinations. Recheck the current BACB examination-information page and handbook before you trust a number in a blog table. Fees, delivery, and item counts are time-sensitive.

A practical way to use this fact while studying

Build mixed sets that cross domains rather than 85-question marathons every night. The official exam is 85 items once, on test day. Daily work can be smaller and still train the same decision: read the stem, identify the technician task, compare four options, choose one.

Keep the outline counts in view so Acquisition and Reduction get more minutes than Assessment, without dropping Ethics or Documentation. Ten original Passy questions are a checkpoint, not a full-length replica.
