RBT Exam Changes in 2026: What the 3rd Edition Changed

January 1, 2026 is an outline date, not a rumor

January 1, 2026 is the date the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) replaced the Task List (2nd ed.) for the examination. Audit your notes against the six current domains → before you keep drilling a packet labeled “Task List 2.” If the table of contents still uses 2nd Edition task numbering as the exam map, it is describing the previous content.

BACB’s test-content-outlines page and the 3rd Edition PDF are the primary sources. The examination remains 85 items, 90 minutes, 75 scored plus 10 unscored, four options, English, in-person Pearson VUE. The 2026 change is about what those items cover, plus aligned 2026 training and competency documents—not a new item count.

What the 3rd Edition organizes that you should actually use

The current scored domains are:

A. Data Collection and Graphing — 13 (17%)
B. Behavior Assessment — 8 (11%)
C. Behavior Acquisition — 19 (25%)
D. Behavior Reduction — 14 (19%)
E. Documentation and Reporting — 10 (13%)
F. Ethics — 11 (15%)

Percentages are of the 75 scored items. The what-to-study guide is the study map built on these counts. This page exists so you do not mix editions.

ABA knowledge did not become unfamiliar overnight. Measurement, reinforcement, prompting, functions, and ethics still matter. The risk is studying the wrong grouping, old task labels, or retired weighting as if they were current.

Training and competency changed on a 2026 track too

The examination outline is not the only 2026 document. BACB published a 2026 RBT 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline. Training must follow that curriculum for people on the 2026 path, in no fewer than 5 and no more than 180 days, totaling 40 hours. BACB does not provide the training. The 40-hour guide owns those rules.

The Initial Competency Assessment has a packet effective January 1, 2026. It still follows training and must occur no more than 90 days before application, with a qualified assessor. The competency guide stays on that requirement.

Do not assume a training course completed under an older curriculum automatically matches the 2026 examination. If you are unsure which curriculum you completed, ask the training provider and check the current handbook before you apply.

What did not secretly change

The exam did not become an essay test. It did not become adaptive. It did not move online. The online-testing guide answers delivery.

Scoring remains pass/fail with equated forms. The passing-score guide warns against invented raw cutoffs. Those warnings were already true; 2026 did not create a public “need 60 out of 75” number.

Passy’s practice items are original and aligned to the current public outline. They are not recalled 2nd Edition items restyled with a new header.

When the edition question is settled, use rationales to see whether misses are outline gaps or classification gaps →. A 3rd Edition PDF on the desk does not help if the decisions still follow 2nd Edition habits.

How to retire old materials without starting from zero

Keep explanations of core ABA distinctions that are still in the 3rd Edition: continuous versus discontinuous measurement, reinforcement versus punishment, prompting and fading, ABC and functions. Drop any study plan that treats old task-list domains as the scored map.

The study guide is the current overview. Domain articles under content areas use 3rd Edition names only.

Once the old packet is retired, put a mixed 3rd Edition set on the calendar → so the new domain names get used, not just filed.

Recheck BACB if you sit much later than 2026. Outlines can be revised again. This article’s job is to stop silent use of 2nd Edition pages as if they were the current exam.
