How to Become an RBT in 2026: Step-by-Step
The 2026 RBT path is training, competency, BACB application, then the in-person exam. This is the concise sequence, not a career blog.
Short answer
To become an RBT in 2026, complete BACB’s current eligibility steps: 40-hour training on the 2026 curriculum, the Initial Competency Assessment with a qualified assessor, a BACB application, then the in-person RBT examination. After a pass, certification stays inactive until a qualified supervisor adds you. Recheck the current RBT Handbook; this sequence is administrative and can be updated.
The path is a sequence, not a single form
Becoming an RBT is a sequence of training, competency, application, and examination, and skipping a step delays authorization. Plan exam review beside those administrative steps so Pearson VUE is not the first time you classify the six current domains. This page stays short on purpose. It is not a career essay about whether you should enter the field.
Confirm every step in the current RBT Handbook before you pay. Passy is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board.
The current order
1. Confirm eligibility in the handbook (age, education, and any other current requirements). Do not copy a third-party checklist as if it were BACB.
2. Complete 40-hour training using the 2026 curriculum, in no fewer than 5 and no more than 180 days. BACB does not provide the course. Details: 40-hour training.
3. Complete the Initial Competency Assessment after training, no more than 90 days before application, with a qualified assessor. Details: competency assessment.
4. Apply to BACB and pay the current application processing fee. As of the September 2026 check, that fee is $65. See exam cost.
5. After approval, schedule Pearson VUE. The examination is in person, 85 items, 90 minutes, English. Authorization is time-limited (the handbook describes a one-year window from approval). Delivery details: exam day and online testing.
6. Sit the exam based on the Test Content Outline (3rd ed.). Study map: what to study and the study guide.
7. After a pass, certification is inactive until a qualified supervisor adds you. After a fail, follow retake rules. See results and failed exam.
If you are between steps 5 and 6, turn unused days into current-domain practice rather than waiting passively for the appointment email.
What this page will not expand
It will not compare salaries, job boards, or “is ABA right for you.” Those queries are not the RBT examination problem.
It will not list every background-check vendor. Follow the handbook and your employer.
It will not replace ethics or supervision rules. The ethics guide is for exam-relevant role boundaries.
Ongoing recertification and supervision after you are certified are handbook topics beyond this sequence. Recheck them when you are actually certified.
When the remaining work is the test rather than the paperwork, use a short mixed set to see which domain is still weak.
A note on 2026 documents
Training, competency, and the examination outline all have 2026 versions. Using a 2nd Edition Task List as the exam map is the most common sequence error that still looks “official” on a USB drive. The 2026 changes guide is the edition check.
Fees, delivery, and windows change. If this article and the handbook diverge later, follow BACB and Pearson VUE.
Once the steps are on a calendar, put the next study block into RBT practice. The credential is the sequence. The appointment still tests the outline.
