How to Become an RBT in 2026: Step-by-Step

The path is a sequence, not a single form

Becoming an RBT is a sequence of training, competency, application, and examination, and skipping a step delays authorization. The current order

1. Create a BACB portal account with your full legal name exactly as it appears on your government-issued ID, and a personal email address. A name that does not match your ID can stop you from testing.

2. Meet the eligibility requirements. You must be at least 18 when you apply, have at least a high school education or the equivalent, and pass a criminal background check and an abuse-registry check no more than 180 days before you pay for the application. BACB does not require fingerprinting, but your state or employer may.

3. Complete 40-hour training using the 2026 curriculum, in no fewer than 5 and no more than 180 days. BACB does not provide the course. Details: 40-hour training.

4. Complete the Initial Competency Assessment after training, no more than 90 days before application, with a qualified assessor. Details: competency assessment.

5. Get the attestation form signed. An Attesting Certificant (a BCBA or BCaBA) confirms your age, education, and both checks, then signs the RBT Certification Application Attestation form no more than 90 days before you pay for the application. That person may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by you.

6. Apply to BACB and upload the attestation form, your 40-hour training certificate, and the completed competency assessment. As of the October 16, 2026 check, the application processing fee is $65. Applications stay active for 90 days, and BACB asks you to allow two weeks for processing. See exam cost.

7. After approval, schedule Pearson VUE. The examination is in person, 85 items, 90 minutes, English. You have one year from the day your application is approved to sit the exam. Delivery details: exam day and online testing.

8. Sit the exam based on the Test Content Outline (3rd ed.). Study map: what to study and the study guide.

9. After a pass, certification is inactive until a qualified RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator adds you as a supervisee. After a fail, follow retake rules. See results and failed exam.

After you are certified

Certification comes with ongoing rules. You practice under supervision for at least 5% of your service hours each month, follow the RBT Ethics Code (2.0), and recertify on time. Under the 2026 rules, someone first certified in 2026 recertifies every two years and earns 12 professional development units (PDUs) in each cycle. A note on 2026 documents

Training, competency, the examination outline, and recertification all have 2026 versions. Using a 2nd Edition Task List as the exam map is a sequence error that can still look “official” on a USB drive. The 2026 changes guide is the edition check.
