How Much Does the RBT Exam Cost in 2026?

Two payments, not one blog “exam fee”

RBT exam cost is two separate payments, not one combined number copied from an old blog. Confirm fees on BACB and Pearson VUE, not on a third-party table. The application fee goes to BACB. The appointment fee goes to Pearson. They are billed on different schedules and can change independently.

As of the October 16, 2026 check of the RBT Handbook (updated June 2026) fee table and Pearson’s BACB page:

• BACB 2026 certification application processing fee: $65, paid to the BACB. The examination-information page does not list this amount. The handbook fee table does.
• Pearson VUE examination appointment: $45 per appointment. Pearson may add sales tax, VAT, GST, or a similar local tax when the law where you test requires it.

The handbook says a fee is not currently required to submit a retake application. You still pay Pearson again for the new seat. The failed-exam guide covers attempt limits and the 7-day wait.

Reschedule and cancellation windows

Pearson publishes a sliding charge for changing or canceling a BACB examination appointment. As of the same source check:

• 31 or more days before the appointment: $0
• 30 to 5 days: $27
• 5 days down to 48 hours: $32
• within 48 hours: changes are not permitted under that table

Lateness and no-shows cost the full appointment fee. The handbook says that if you arrive more than 30 minutes late, you are turned away and the scheduling fee is forfeited. If you do not show up, the fee is forfeited too, and you pay Pearson again for a new appointment, which you can book in your Pearson VUE account. If you cannot complete check-in, for example because your ID does not match the name in your BACB account, all paid fees are forfeited. The exam-day guide is the place to prevent that.

Training program tuition, background checks, and employer reimbursements are not BACB exam fees. They can dwarf $65 + $45. This page does not estimate those local costs.

If a reschedule is likely because your competency date is still moving, use the extra days for mixed domain practice rather than treating the calendar change as downtime.

What the fees do not buy

They do not buy official exam items. They do not include Passy. They do not include the 40-hour training. BACB does not provide that training. The 40-hour guide explains the curriculum rule without a price list for private vendors.

They do not include the Initial Competency Assessment. That is arranged with a qualified assessor. The competency guide describes the requirement, not a BACB fee for the assessment itself.

They do not create an online exam option. Delivery remains in person. The online-testing guide states that rule.

If fee research has replaced actual outline work, return to the domain that still produces misses rather than comparing another unofficial price table.

Employers sometimes reimburse BACB and Pearson fees. Get that policy in writing. The handbook also notes that veterans who qualify for the GI Bill can be reimbursed for BACB examination fees by the Department of Veterans Affairs, whether or not they pass. Reimbursement does not change the official amounts.

Keeping the credential has its own cost later. The handbook lists a $50 processing fee for the 2-year recertification application (beginning January 1, 2026), plus a $50 late fee if you recertify during the 30-day reinstatement period.

How to avoid paying twice by accident

Apply only when every requirement is done. The handbook says certification applications stay active for 90 days; if you do not meet all requirements in that time, you reapply and pay the $65 fee again. Complete training, competency, and the attestation form first. After approval you have one year to sit the exam, so schedule Pearson inside that window with enough margin for a 7-day retake wait if needed.

Do not use a third-party “exam registration” site that is not Pearson VUE. The official path is BACB application, then Pearson appointment.

Keep screenshots or receipts of what you paid and when. Fee disputes are administrative, not content issues.

When the budget question is answered, return the remaining study days to current-domain decisions. The outline, not the receipt, is what the 85 items will test.
