RBT Initial Competency Assessment: What to Expect in 2026

Competency is a demonstration, not the computer test

The Initial Competency Assessment is a skills demonstration after training, not the computer exam itself. Use exam practice for the written outline → and keep competency day for showing the skills a qualified assessor must see. Mixing those two events is how people either under-prepare for Pearson VUE or treat a skills check like a trivia quiz.

Current BACB materials (the 2026 Initial Competency Assessment packet and the RBT Handbook) place competency after 40-hour training and no more than 90 days before application. The assessor must be a qualified BCBA or BCaBA who meets the current supervision-training requirement described in BACB documents. Recheck the packet if you are scheduling; assessor rules are time-sensitive.

What you should expect on competency day

You demonstrate tasks from the current competency packet, which is aligned with 2026 requirements rather than a homemade clinic checklist. The assessor observes, scores, and documents according to that packet. Some tasks may be interview or role-play if the packet allows it. Do not invent a “they only ask ethics questions” version.

Bring whatever identification and documentation the assessor and employer require. This is not Pearson VUE check-in. There is no 85-item clock. There is also no license to implement untrained procedures because the appointment is tomorrow.

If a task in the packet overlaps an exam domain—prompting, data collection, professional conduct—rehearse the technician action the packet names → so the demonstration and the later multiple-choice items share the same decision, not two vocabularies.

Timing mistakes that delay application

Finishing training and waiting four months before competency can push you outside the 90-day-before-application rule. Completing competency and then delaying the BACB application creates the same problem.

Assessor availability is a local logistics issue. Book early. BACB does not assign you a random Pearson-style center for competency.

When the date is set, keep a light mixed exam set in the same weeks → so application, authorization, and Pearson are not a content surprise.

Ethics still apply during the assessment

You remain inside competence and supervision. Do not perform a procedure you have not been trained to demonstrate. Do not falsify data to look fluent. The ethics guide is the exam-oriented ethics page; the Ethics Code is the professional rule.

The assessor is not your exam coach and not BACB. Passing competency is a gateway to application, not an endorsement of Passy or of any question bank.

After you pass competency

Apply within the timing rules. Then study the 3rd Edition outline as an examination. Acquisition items on Pearson VUE will not be a live client. They will be four-option classifications. The behavior acquisition guide is for that later task.

If competency revealed a weak skill, repair it under supervision in the clinic and in exam review. The two repairs can share a name (for example, least-to-most prompting) and still need both a live demonstration and a written distinction.
