RBT Behavior Acquisition: What to Know for the Exam

Domain C is 19 scored items—the largest RBT area. Study reinforcement, DTT, naturalistic teaching, chaining, prompting, and related acquisition tasks.

Short answer

Behavior Acquisition is Domain C on the current RBT outline: 19 of 75 scored items (25%), the largest share. Items ask whether you can implement teaching procedures as written—reinforcement, discrete-trial and naturalistic teaching, chaining, prompting and fading, discrimination, generalization, maintenance, shaping, and token economies—not whether you can invent a new curriculum.

The largest domain is still a technician domain

Behavior Acquisition is the largest scored domain, and most items turn on whether the consequence or prompt actually produced learning. Practice identifying the teaching procedure the stem describes instead of collecting extra curriculum names. Nineteen items (25% of the 75 scored questions) is enough to dominate a result if this area is weak, and not enough to ignore Reduction or Ethics.

You implement the plan. You do not rewrite it between trials because a different prompt “feels nicer.”

Reinforcement is the engine; classification is the test

If the response becomes more likely after a consequence, you are looking at reinforcement. If it becomes less likely, punishment. Added stimulus versus removed stimulus is the positive/negative axis. The dedicated comparison is reinforcement versus punishment. Domain C items use that classification constantly.

Discrete-trial teaching (DTT) is instructor-arranged: cue, response, consequence, brief pause, next trial. Naturalistic or incidental teaching captures a motivating moment in the routine. The exam often asks which format you are in, not which one is morally better.

Chaining teaches a sequence: forward, backward, or total task, as the plan states. Shaping reinforces successive approximations, not the finished chain. Mixing those two is a classic miss.

When the procedure name is clear but the consequence is not, work items that only change what happens after the response.

Prompts, fading, discrimination, generalization

A prompt is extra help. Fading removes it so independence remains. Most-to-least starts intrusive and reduces. Least-to-most starts with the chance to respond independently and adds help. Time delay inserts wait. The prompting and fading guide is the close-up.

Discrimination training teaches responding in the presence of the correct stimulus and not in the presence of others. Generalization is performance across people, settings, or materials. Maintenance is performance over time after teaching has thinned. Acquisition is the learning phase. Items like to swap those last two.

Token economies deliver tokens according to the plan and exchange them for backup reinforcers. Do not invent a new exchange rate in the session.

If prompt dependence is the pattern in your misses, use a focused explanation of which hierarchy the plan named.

Adjacent domains you should not dump into Acquisition

Reduction procedures can appear in the same appointment. Teaching an alternative (DRA) lives conceptually next to acquisition, but Domain D owns function and reduction packages. See behavior reduction.

Ethics still forbids implementing untrained acquisition procedures. If the stem offers a new prompting method from a coworker, ask the supervisor.

When you can sort DTT from naturalistic teaching and reinforcement from punishment, put Acquisition back into a mixed six-domain set. Isolated chapter mastery is not the examination.
