RBT DTT vs Naturalistic Teaching

Discrete-trial teaching uses a tightly structured trial. Naturalistic teaching uses the client’s ongoing activities and motivation. Both are Domain C. Implement the written plan, not a preference for ‘more natural.’

Short answer

Discrete-trial teaching (DTT) presents a clear instruction, a response opportunity, and a planned consequence in a structured trial, often at a table. Naturalistic teaching (including incidental teaching and related NET-style procedures) embeds instruction in ongoing play or daily routines and uses the client’s current motivation. Both are Domain C acquisition procedures. The exam asks which structure the plan names, not which one feels kinder.

Same goal, different trial structure

Discrete-trial teaching and naturalistic teaching both teach skills. They differ in how tightly the technician structures the trial. Match the stem to table-trial versus motivation-in-the-environment before you argue about kindness. The parent is behavior acquisition. Prompting can appear in both.

DTT: instruction (SD), response, consequence, brief intertrial interval. Mass trials or mixed trials as written. Data often per trial.

Naturalistic: wait for or arrange a motivating situation (a toy out of reach, a pause in play), prompt the target if the plan says to, reinforce with the functional outcome (access to the toy), and keep the interaction moving. Data may be per opportunity or per session as written.

Neither is “the ethical one.” Ethics is Domain F. Instructional design is the supervisor’s plan.

How items usually discriminate them

If the stem describes a table, a repeated “touch red,” and tokens after each correct, you are in DTT.

If the stem describes the client reaching for bubbles and the technician waiting for a mand before blowing them, you are in naturalistic teaching.

Original teaching sketch: Teaching “open” by placing a closed jar of preferred snacks in play and reinforcing the mand with opening the jar is naturalistic. Teaching “open” with flashcards of the printed word at a table is DTT. Both can be correct if that is the plan.

Discrimination training often uses DTT. Shaping can appear in either structure.

When the two still collapse, use stems that only change where the SD is presented.

Fidelity problems the exam likes

In DTT: skipping the intertrial pause, changing the SD wording, reinforcing a different response because it was “close enough” when the plan required exactness.

In naturalistic: turning play into a disguised table drill, withholding the functional reinforcer after a correct mand, or prompting every time so initiation never occurs.

Record the prompt level the sheet requires. Do not switch structures mid-session because a coworker prefers the other.

Then mix both structures into Domain C practice so prompting and consequences still match the plan.
