RBT Behavior Reduction: What to Know for the Exam

Function first, then the matching plan element

Behavior Reduction items usually start from function: what the behavior gets or avoids, then which plan element matches that function. Practice matching consequence patterns to procedures in the Passy RBT prep app → before you memorize a list of acronyms. Fourteen scored items (19%) is the second-largest domain. Guessing “extinction” on every problem behavior is not a strategy.

Common functions you must be able to use: attention, tangibles, escape/avoidance, and automatic/sensory. The evidence comes from what reliably follows the behavior and whether that behavior then increases. ABC data and functions is the dedicated page. Differential reinforcement, extinction, antecedents

DRA reinforces an alternative, often a communication response, while the problem behavior is not reinforced. DRI reinforces a response that cannot occur at the same time as the problem. DRO reinforces the absence of the problem during an interval, regardless of what else the person was doing. DRL reinforces lower rates. Extinction withholds the maintaining reinforcer. The outline names its secondary effects: an extinction burst, response variation, resurgence (an older, previously reinforced behavior returning when the current one stops paying off), and emotional responding such as crying or aggression. The exam likes to ask whether you recognize those effects rather than abandoning the plan without supervisor direction. The extinction guide works through examples by function.

Antecedent strategies (noncontingent reinforcement, high-p sequences, demand fading) change conditions before the behavior. They are not the same as a consequence procedure, even when they reduce behavior.

Punishment decreases future probability of the response. Know the difference from reinforcement. See reinforcement versus punishment. Crisis procedures and the ethics edge

Crisis or emergency procedures exist to keep people safe as written. They are not a chance to invent a hold you saw in a video. If the stem offers an untrained physical procedure, the better action is the trained plan plus supervisor/emergency rules. The ethics guide is explicit about competence.

Do not withhold a planned reinforcer as freelance punishment. Do not ignore the plan because the behavior “looked attention-seeking today.” Collect the data, implement the plan, report.

How to study Domain D without a procedure dump

For each miss, write: function evidence, procedure in the plan, nearby distractor (usually another DR or extinction). Mix with other domains so Reduction items do not only appear after a Reduction heading.
