RBT 40-Hour Training Requirements in 2026

The 2026 RBT 40-hour training is a timed curriculum BACB does not provide. Know the 5-to-180-day window, what training is for, and how it relates to the exam.

Short answer

The 2026 RBT 40-hour training is a BACB-required curriculum completed with an eligible provider, not with BACB itself. Current requirements specify 40 hours finished in no fewer than 5 days and no more than 180 days. Training comes before the Initial Competency Assessment and the examination. Completing the 40 hours does not replace studying the current Test Content Outline.

Forty hours is a timed curriculum, not a weekend shortcut

The 40-hour training requirement is a timed curriculum, not a weekend cram you can compress into four days. After training, shift extra minutes toward current exam-domain practice rather than assuming the course slides are the whole preparation. Current BACB 2026 training requirements specify 40 hours completed in no fewer than 5 days and no more than 180 days. BACB does not provide the training.

Use a provider that follows the 2026 RBT 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline. An older course built only on the 2nd Edition Task List is the wrong track for the 2026 examination path. The 2026 changes guide explains why that distinction matters.

Where training sits in the sequence

Typical order is: meet eligibility in the current handbook, complete 40-hour training, complete the Initial Competency Assessment, apply to BACB, receive authorization, then sit the Pearson VUE examination. The how-to-become guide is the short sequence page. This page owns the training step.

Competency must occur after training and no more than 90 days before application, according to current competency-packet timing. Do not finish training and wait so long that the competency window is a scramble. The competency guide covers assessor qualifications.

Training hours are not Pearson VUE hours. You can complete an online curriculum and still take the exam in person. The online-testing guide keeps those facts separate.

If the course is done and the exam is not, build a calendar that covers all six current domains instead of replaying the same training videos.

What the 40 hours are for—and what they are not

They introduce the knowledge and skills BACB requires before competency and application. They are not a guarantee that you can classify 85 mixed items in 90 minutes. Many candidates still need dedicated exam review after the course.

They are not official exam items. Course quizzes are the provider’s materials. Recalled BACB items have no place in training or in Passy.

They are not ethics supervision for the rest of your career. Ongoing supervision after certification is a separate handbook topic.

Passy is not a 40-hour training provider. Use Passy for exam-oriented practice after you understand the current outline. The what-to-study guide is the exam map.

When a training quiz felt easy but mixed items do not, practice the technician decision the course only named.

Practical timing mistakes

Starting 40 hours four days before an application deadline violates the minimum 5-day span. Stretching past 180 days violates the maximum. Both are avoidable with a calendar.

Paying for training that does not follow the 2026 curriculum wastes money and time. Ask the provider which BACB curriculum document they use. Get completion documentation you can produce at application.

Employer-required onboarding is not automatically BACB 40-hour training. Confirm the certificate matches the current requirement.

Fees for training are vendor-specific. They are not the $65 BACB application fee or the $45 Pearson appointment. The cost guide lists those two official payments.

After the certificate is in hand

Schedule competency with a qualified assessor. Then apply. Then study the 3rd Edition outline as an exam, not as a replay of day-one slides.

If you already work in a clinic, keep implementing only trained procedures under supervision. Training completion does not expand scope.

When the remaining gap is examination performance, use mixed RBT practice plus a simple plan so the 40 hours become a foundation rather than the entire strategy.
