Can You Take the RBT Exam Online in 2026?

The current exam is in person, not at your kitchen table

The current RBT examination is delivered in person at authorized Pearson VUE sites, not as a take-home or live-online option. Prepare for a testing-center session → rather than for a webcam setup at the dining table. Pearson VUE’s BACB page describes in-person delivery for these examinations. BACB’s handbook and examination-information materials match that arrangement.

Older articles sometimes still mention remote proctoring from a period when it was available. That is not the current authorized method. Do not build a study or travel plan around a blog that was not updated after remote testing ended.

If a coworker took the exam years ago from home, their story does not override Pearson and BACB. Delivery is an administration rule. It can change again. Recheck the two official pages before you schedule.

What “in person” actually requires

You need BACB application approval and an examination authorization, then a Pearson VUE appointment at a site that offers BACB examinations (or a qualifying military test location where applicable). You must present required identification and complete check-in. The exam-day guide covers that process.

The examination itself remains 85 multiple-choice items in 90 minutes, in English. Online versus in person does not change the outline. It changes where you sit.

Travel, childcare, and work coverage are part of exam planning because you cannot start the test from the clinic computer. Appointment availability varies by site. Book inside your authorization window. The handbook describes how long authorization lasts after application approval.

Pearson appointment fees and reschedule rules still apply. The cost guide keeps those amounts separate from the BACB application fee.

If logistics are settled and content is not, use mixed current-domain practice for the 90-minute center format → instead of researching more remote-testing rumors.

What this does not mean

It does not mean your 40-hour training must be in a physical classroom. Training delivery is a separate BACB curriculum rule. Many training programs are online. That is not the examination. The 40-hour training guide explains the timed curriculum without confusing it with Pearson VUE.

It does not mean the Initial Competency Assessment is a Pearson appointment. Competency is a skills demonstration with a qualified assessor. The competency guide owns that step.

It does not mean every BACB examination for every credential uses the same delivery. This page is about the RBT examination. Do not import NCLEX or other-exam remote rules.

If a coworker’s remote story is crowding out content review, repair the domain that is actually still weak → instead of refreshing older delivery articles.

The 2026 changes guide is about content outline, not about inventing a new online option. The 3rd Edition change did not, by itself, create at-home testing.

If no nearby site is convenient

Search Pearson VUE for BACB sites and available dates. A longer drive is still the current path. Military candidates should follow the qualifying-base instructions Pearson and BACB publish, not a generic “any base” assumption.

Do not pay a third party that claims to administer the official RBT exam online. The official appointment path is BACB authorization plus Pearson VUE.

If a future BACB announcement restores remote delivery, it will appear on BACB and Pearson pages. Until then, plan to travel.

Once the delivery question is closed, put the remaining days into current outline practice → rather than refreshing search results for “RBT exam online.” The open problem is the six domains, not the webcam.
