RBT to BCBA: Which RBT Hours Count Toward Fieldwork and What Else You Need

Being an RBT isn't required for BCBA certification, but it's a common route. Here is what an RBT still needs, how RBT supervision differs from BCBA fieldwork supervision, which RBT hours and meetings the BACB says can count, and the order to set things up.

Short answer

You don't need to be an RBT to become a BCBA, but many BCBAs start that way. As an RBT you still need a qualifying master's degree, behavior-analytic coursework or an accredited program, 2,000 hours of Supervised Fieldwork (or 1,500 concentrated), and a passing BCBA exam. RBT work counts toward fieldwork only when it also meets the fieldwork rules: you've started qualifying coursework, a qualified BCBA supervises you under a fieldwork contract, you document it separately, and enough of it is unrestricted, because most RBT service time is restricted and restricted hours are capped at 40%.

Do you have to be an RBT to become a BCBA?

No. In the BCBA Handbook, every eligibility pathway requires a degree, behavior-analytic content, supervised fieldwork and a passing exam, and RBT certification isn't on that list. It is a common starting point, though: in a 2023 post, 7 FAQs for RBTs Pursuing BCBA or BCaBA Certification, the BACB said nearly half of recently certified BCBAs and BCaBAs were RBTs when they applied.

The advantage of starting as an RBT is experience with clients and supervision. The catch is that RBT work and BCBA fieldwork run under different rules, and only hours that meet the fieldwork rules count.

What an RBT still needs for BCBA eligibility

RequirementWhat the BACB requiresWhat changes on January 1, 2027
DegreeA master's or higher: from an accredited or recognized behavior analysis program (Pathway 1), or in any field from a qualifying institution (Pathway 2)Pathway 2 degrees can't be completed in less than one calendar year
Behavior-analytic contentBuilt into a Pathway 1 program, or 315 hours of graduate coursework on Pathway 2Pathway 2 coursework moves to six content areas in freestanding courses
Supervised fieldwork2,000 hours of Supervised Fieldwork or 1,500 of Concentrated, within five continuous yearsMonthly rules change (see below)
ExamThe BCBA exam: 185 questions in 4 hoursNo change announced

Pathways 3 and 4 exist until the end of 2026, but they're built for faculty and postdoctoral applicants, not for RBTs moving up. From January 1, 2027, only Pathways 1 and 2 remain. The BCBA 2027 changes guide covers the new coursework rules, and the BCBA application guide covers what to submit at the end. Every pathway ends with the same nine-domain exam, so it helps to know its scope early; flashcards for all nine BCBA domains are planned for launch.

RBT supervision vs BCBA fieldwork supervision

Both involve a supervisor and a 5% figure, which is why people assume they're interchangeable. They aren't. Here are the monthly rules from the RBT Handbook and the BCBA Handbook, as checked on October 27, 2026:

Each monthOngoing RBT supervisionBCBA Supervised Fieldwork (2022 rules)Concentrated (2022 rules)

Observation with a clientIn at least one monthly contact11
Hours rangeNo monthly range20 to 13020 to 130
Who supervisesAn RBT Supervisor certified as a BCBA or BCaBAA BCBA who meets the fieldwork supervisor requirementsSame

Under the 2027 fieldwork rules, the monthly range becomes 20 to 160 hours, concentrated supervision becomes 7.5%, observation is counted in minutes (60 or 90 per month), and the 2027 tables list no minimum number of contacts. The ongoing RBT rules are covered in Passy's RBT supervision requirements guide.

One consequence of the last row: fieldwork supervisors must be BCBAs who have completed the 8-hour supervision training and meet the other handbook requirements, so a BCaBA who supervises you as an RBT can't be your fieldwork supervisor. The BACB's fieldwork FAQ puts it generally: someone qualified to supervise RBTs may not be qualified to supervise fieldwork.

Which RBT hours can count toward BCBA fieldwork

The BACB's FAQ post for RBTs answers this directly. In summary:

  • You can accrue fieldwork while working as an RBT, but only if you keep meeting your RBT maintenance requirements, including ongoing supervision, and meet the fieldwork requirements as well.
  • Your service hours can count "in the right circumstances." Most RBT work is restricted activity, and restricted hours can make up no more than 40% of BCBA fieldwork. Some of your RBT hours won't count, and the BACB says that's okay.
  • Your RBT supervision meetings can count, but probably not all of them. The BACB's fieldwork FAQ calls this double dipping and allows it only when a supervision contract is in place, the supervisor is qualified for fieldwork, and the meeting's activities meet both sets of requirements.
  • Your documentation can't be the same. For example, fieldwork needs a summary of each supervision activity, and RBT supervision doesn't.
  • Your RBT Supervisor can also supervise fieldwork if they meet both sets of requirements.
  • Two ethics codes apply by role. As an RBT you follow the RBT Ethics Code (2.0); during fieldwork you must comply with the Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts.

One timing rule matters more than any of these. The handbook says fieldwork hours can't start until you have a qualified supervisor, a signed supervision contract and, on Pathways 1 and 2, a start in qualifying graduate coursework. RBT hours you worked before enrolling in that coursework can't be counted afterward.

Here is what the 40% cap means in practice, with Passy's arithmetic. Of 2,000 Supervised Fieldwork hours, at most 800 can be restricted. If you logged 120 hours a month of direct service as fieldwork, you would reach 800 restricted hours in under seven months, and every remaining hour toward 2,000 would have to be unrestricted. The restricted vs unrestricted hours guide shows how the BACB sorts common activities.

Starting BCBA fieldwork as an RBT: an order that works

  1. Enroll in qualifying coursework, either a Pathway 1 program or Pathway 2 coursework. Hours can start after your first class meeting, and that course must end with a C or better (or a pass).
  2. Find a qualified BCBA supervisor. Check the BACB Certificant Registry for their certification and the date they completed the 8-hour supervision training. Your current RBT Supervisor may qualify.
  3. Sign a supervision contract with each fieldwork supervisor. The handbook says it should include a statement requiring written permission from your on-site employer or manager when that applies.
  4. Set up a fieldwork log separate from your RBT records, with the category (restricted or unrestricted) for each entry.
  5. Plan unrestricted work with your employer, such as graphing and analyzing data, helping with assessments, writing program drafts for review, and training caregivers.
  6. Keep your RBT certification current if you're still practicing as an RBT, since fieldwork doesn't replace RBT supervision.

Fieldwork plus coursework usually takes well over a year, which leaves plenty of time for exam study; a 180-day access period planned for launch suits a longer study window if you want structured practice later, though checkout isn't open yet. The BCBA fieldwork hours guide covers the monthly rules in full.

From the RBT exam to the BCBA exam

The BCBA exam is a bigger step than the RBT exam: 185 questions in 4 hours instead of 85 in 90 minutes, and nine content domains instead of six. The RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.) has nothing that corresponds to Behaviorism and Philosophical Foundations or Experimental Design, and its supervision task is about receiving supervision, while Personnel Supervision and Management asks you to supervise others. The BACB's own pass rates show the gap, and how hard the BCBA exam is puts them side by side. Your RBT work gives you a head start on procedures, so those three domains deserve early attention.

Your next step from RBT to BCBA

Talk to your supervisor this month about your goal, using the BACB's FAQ post as the agenda: whether they can supervise fieldwork, what a contract would include, and which unrestricted activities your workplace can offer. When study begins, try the 20 free BCBA practice questions to see how the nine domains feel compared with the RBT exam. Once full prep opens, practice on Experimental Design, Supervision and the other domains new to RBTs is planned for launch.

Passy is not affiliated with or endorsed by the BACB. The BACB can't rule on whether a specific activity counts outside a formal application review, so confirm your plan with a qualified supervisor.
