BCBA Fieldwork Hours: 2,000 or 1,500, the Monthly Rules, and What Changes in 2027
BCBA trainees need 2,000 hours of Supervised Fieldwork or 1,500 of Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork, and every calendar month has its own rules. Here is what each month must include, how the BACB cuts a month that falls short, how the 1.33 multiplier works, and which forms to sign if you might apply in 2027.
Short answer
Under the rules that apply to complete applications received by December 31, 2026, you need 2,000 hours of Supervised Fieldwork with 5% of each month's hours supervised, or 1,500 hours of Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork with 10% supervised, or a mix converted with a 1.33 multiplier. Every calendar month needs 20 to 130 hours, at least one supervisor observation with a client and enough supervisor contacts, and all hours must fall within five continuous years. From January 1, 2027, the monthly cap becomes 160 hours, concentrated supervision becomes 7.5%, and observation is counted in minutes.
BCBA fieldwork requirements, month by month
Supervised fieldwork is counted one calendar month at a time, and each month either meets its requirements or gets cut. These are the rules in the BCBA Handbook (updated 06/2026) and the BACB's 2027 BCBA Requirements, as checked on October 27, 2026:
| Requirement | Supervised Fieldwork (2022 rules) | Concentrated (2022 rules) | From January 1, 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total hours | 2,000 | 1,500 | Same totals |
| Hours per month | 20 to 130 | 20 to 130 | 20 to 160 |
| Share of hours supervised | 5% | 10% | 5% Supervised, 7.5% Concentrated |
| Supervisor contacts per month | 4 | 6 | No minimum in the 2027 tables |
| Observation with a client per month | 1 | 1 | 60 minutes Supervised, 90 Concentrated (cumulative) |
| Individual supervision | At least 50% of supervised hours | Same | Same |
| Unrestricted activities | At least 60% of total hours | Same | Same |
| Time limit | Five continuous years | Same | Same |
The 2022 column applies if your complete application, including payment and all documents, reaches the BACB by December 31, 2026. Pathway 4 applicants need only 500 Supervised Fieldwork hours, but Pathway 4 closes on that same date.
The supervision share is supervised hours divided by all fieldwork hours, independent plus supervised. In a 100-hour month of Supervised Fieldwork, at least 5 hours must be supervised; in Concentrated, at least 10. Totals include both kinds of hours. Which activities count as restricted or unrestricted has its own guide: restricted vs unrestricted hours in BCBA fieldwork.
Before your first BCBA fieldwork hour counts
The handbook lists three conditions. You need a qualified supervisor, a signed supervision contract with each supervisor, and, on Pathways 1 and 2, a start in qualifying graduate behavior-analytic coursework. Hours can begin after the first class meeting of that course, but they only count if you finish the course with a C or better (or a pass).
Your supervisor must be an active BCBA with no current disciplinary sanctions who meets the ongoing supervision CEU requirement, and either:
- certified for at least one year, or
- certified for less than a year and receiving monthly consultation from a qualified consulting supervisor.
Every supervisor must also complete the BACB's 8-hour supervision training and upload the certificate before signing your contract, so check the date in the BACB Certificant Registry first. A supervisor can't be related to you, subordinate to you, employed by you, or in a multiple relationship with you; paying them for supervision doesn't count as employing them. One carryover rule: hours earned before January 1, 2026 under a licensed, registered psychologist certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology, or under a non-certified Verified Course Sequence instructor, can be used until December 31, 2031.
Clients must be real clients with whom you and your supervisor have a formal relationship, and you can't be related to the client or to the client's primary caregiver, or be that caregiver. The BACB's Fieldwork Checklist and Tip Sheet turns these conditions into a sign-off list to share with each supervisor before you start.
Mixing Supervised and Concentrated hours with the 1.33 multiplier
You can switch fieldwork types, but only one type counts per month for each supervision structure, and that month must meet all of that type's rules. To see whether mixed hours reach the total, the handbook gives four steps:
- Add up your Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork hours.
- Multiply that sum by 1.33.
- Add your Supervised Fieldwork hours.
- Check that the combined total is at least 2,000.
For example, 900 concentrated hours count as 1,197 (900 × 1.33), so you'd need 803 Supervised Fieldwork hours to reach 2,000. The multiplier applies only to concentrated hours, and only when you combine the two types to check the total: on your monthly and final forms and in the application, you record the actual hours, not the multiplied ones. If you're audited, the audit log shows which hours you adjusted.
When a BCBA fieldwork month falls short
Before signing each monthly form, you and your supervisor check the month against its requirements. If something was missed, the handbook says how to cut the hours rather than lose the whole month, in most cases:
| Requirement not met | What happens to the month |
|---|---|
| No observation with a client | No hours count |
| Fewer than 20 total hours | No hours count |
| More than 130 total hours | Remove independent hours until the total is 130 |
| Too few supervisor contacts | Prorate the month by the share of required contacts that happened |
| More group than individual supervision | Reduce group hours until they don't exceed individual hours |
| Supervision share below the minimum | Remove independent hours until the share meets the minimum |
| Monthly form not signed by the last day of the following month | No hours count |
The handbook's own example of proration: 2 of 4 required contacts and 110 hours in the month leaves 55 hours (110 × 50%). Here is a second one, with Passy's arithmetic: a Supervised Fieldwork month with 120 hours, 5 of them supervised, is at 4.2%. Cutting 20 independent hours brings it to 100 hours at exactly 5%.
Two limits apply. Concentrated hours can't be prorated or adjusted at all. And your documentation system still keeps the full, unadjusted hours; only the monthly form shows the adjusted figure. The table is written for the 2022 rules, with their 130-hour cap and contact counts; as of October 27, 2026, the handbook hasn't restated it for the 2027 rules.
BCBA fieldwork forms and the signing deadline
For each supervision structure (an individual supervisor, or multiple supervisors at one organization), you and the responsible supervisor complete a Monthly Fieldwork Verification Form (M-FVF) every month. It must be signed by the last day of the calendar month after the month of supervision. At the end of each fieldwork experience, the signed monthly forms become a Final Fieldwork Verification Form (F-FVF). Taking a break under the same contract starts a new experience.
Your own documentation system logs each session's date, start and end times, fieldwork type, supervisor, and whether the activity was restricted or unrestricted, plus a summary for each supervision contact. Only the F-FVF goes into your application; the BCBA application guide covers that step, the seven-year retention rule and audits. The handbook warns that outdated or non-BACB forms aren't accepted, and the BACB's Application Processing Updates page lists the versions it takes. On October 26, 2026, that was any version for the 2022 Fieldwork Requirements.
Which fieldwork forms to sign if you might apply in 2027
The BACB's rule is that fieldwork must meet the requirements in force when you apply, whenever the hours were earned. So the forms follow your application date:
- Complete application received by December 31, 2026. Use the 2022 rules and 2022 forms.
- Applying in 2027. The 2027 Requirements say applicants after January 1, 2027 need the 2027 monthly and final forms.
- Not sure yet. The 2027 transition guidance recommends completing both the 2022 and 2027 M-FVFs each month, and both F-FVFs at the end, with documentation that shows compliance with each set.
Meeting both sets at once is possible if you plan for it. Supervise concentrated hours at 10%, because hours at 7.5% don't count as concentrated under the 2022 rules. Stay at 130 hours a month or less, or be ready to trim 2027-style months for a 2022 application. And log both the number of client observations and the minutes of each, because 2027 counts minutes. The BCBA 2027 changes guide covers the rest of the 2027 rules, including coursework. The exam itself doesn't change with them, and a 185-question mock exam on the same 6th-edition outline is planned for launch.
How long BCBA fieldwork takes at the monthly limits
At the 2022 cap of 130 hours a month, 2,000 Supervised Fieldwork hours take at least 16 months and 1,500 concentrated hours at least 12 (Passy's arithmetic, assuming every month counts in full). Under the 2027 rules, the BACB's tip sheet gives the shortest possible time frames as 1 year and 2 weeks for 2,000 hours and 9 months and 2 weeks for 1,500, both at 160 hours a month. The longest is five years in each case, about 34 hours a month for 2,000 hours or 25 for 1,500. Neither figure allows for holidays, illness or a month that falls below 20 hours.
Fieldwork often overlaps with coursework and the start of exam study. If you're planning both on one calendar, compare the planned 90- and 180-day access periods against your fieldwork timeline; checkout isn't open yet.
Your next step on BCBA fieldwork
- Download the BACB's Fieldwork Checklist and Tip Sheet and fill in your supervisor's registry details before signing anything.
- Agree on a documentation system that records restricted and unrestricted activities from day one.
- Check each month before signing, using the shortfall table above.
- If you're an RBT, read RBT to BCBA: which RBT hours count toward fieldwork before counting any of your current hours.
Fieldwork is also where exam content becomes familiar: assessments, graphs and staff training all show up on the test. When you start studying, the free BCBA study planner spreads your weeks across the nine domains, and practice tagged to the same nine domains is planned for launch.
Passy is not affiliated with or endorsed by the BACB, and the BACB can't confirm whether a specific activity counts outside a formal application review. Confirm your plan with your supervisor against the current handbook.
