ASVAB Line Scores Explained: How They Relate to Military Jobs
The AFQT decides many enlistment floors. A job usually asks for a different composite, and each service builds that composite its own way.
Short answer
A line score is a job composite built from ASVAB subtests. It is not the AFQT percentile. Services do not share one formula or one name. Read the composite the job page names, list the subjects that official page says it uses, and confirm the minimum with a recruiter. Do not add raw correct answers and call the sum a line score.
Why the AFQT is not a job list
The FAQ says AFQT scores are used for enlistment eligibility and that scores on the ASVAB tests are used to determine a job. Those are different uses. Branch floors belong to eligibility. This page belongs to the composite a job asks for.
A high AFQT can still miss a mechanical composite, because that composite may weigh Mechanical Comprehension, Auto and Shop, or Electronics Information. A strong mechanical composite does not replace an AFQT floor.
Services do not share one vocabulary
The Air Force page, checked October 4, 2026, describes four MAGE groups and the subtests it says they use:
| Air Force group | Subtests the page lists |
|---|---|
| Mechanical | Arithmetic Reasoning, Auto and Shop, Mechanical Comprehension, and Verbal Expression |
| Administrative | Mathematics Knowledge and Verbal Expression |
| General | Arithmetic Reasoning and Verbal Expression |
| Electronics | Arithmetic Reasoning, Electronics Information, General Science, and Mathematics Knowledge |
The same page says Paragraph Comprehension and Word Knowledge are combined first into Verbal Expression. It does not print an arithmetic formula you can run on raw correct answers. Do not treat WK + PC as an official score. The page also says these scores are percentiles from 1 to 99 and are not the number of questions answered correctly. That is the same idea as the AFQT percentile, applied to these composites. Score types keeps the definitions apart.
GoArmy describes Army category scores instead of MAGE. Its General Technical description says that group looks at Verbal Expression and Arithmetic Reasoning, and it gives the Stryker Systems Maintainer (91S) as an example of a job in that area. Clerical, on that page, points at Verbal Expression, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge, with Human Resources Specialist (42A) as the example. Those are descriptions of emphasis. They are not a printed equation, and they are not a promise that one score qualifies you for every job in the group.
GoArmy also lists Verbal Expression in a subject list next to the administered tests. The testing program does not administer a Verbal Expression subtest. Study Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension.
Other services use their own composite names. If the job page you have is not the Air Force or Army page above, copy the name from that page. Do not borrow the Air Force letters.
How to read one requirement
Use a real job page or the sheet your recruiter gave you. This worked example uses only the Air Force Mechanical description above. It is not a vacancy and not a cutoff.
- Write the role: “a mechanical Air Force career that uses the Mechanical group.”
- Write the composite name: Mechanical.
- Write the subjects the official page lists: Arithmetic Reasoning, Auto and Shop, Mechanical Comprehension, and the verbal pair that becomes Verbal Expression.
- Mark a preparation priority: if Arithmetic Reasoning is already a miss on your error log, it sits in both the AFQT and this composite, so it stays first. Mechanical Comprehension is the technical add. The mechanical guide is the lesson. Word problems cover the shared math.
- Write the recruiter questions: What minimum does this job use this quarter? Does Auto and Shop count as the combined AS score? Is Assembling Objects on my form?
A worksheet you can copy
| Step | Your notes |
|---|---|
| Desired role | |
| Composite name, copied from the official page | |
| Subjects that page lists | |
| Which of those you already miss | |
| Question you still need to ask |
There is no score that unlocks every job. Meeting a printed minimum is not an assignment. The testing program also does not publish a raw-to-composite calculator on its scoring page, so this guide does not offer one.
