CAPM Renewal: How to Earn and Report 15 PDUs Before Your Three-Year Cycle Ends
The CAPM renews every three years with 15 PDUs, at least 9 of them education split across PMI's Talent Triangle, plus a renewal fee. Here is what counts, the proof an audit asks for, three ways to reach 15, how to report in CCRS, and what suspension and expiry mean.
Short answer
Your CAPM stays active through PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements program: 15 professional development units (PDUs) in each three-year cycle, which starts the day you pass. At least 9 must be education PDUs, with at least 2 each in Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen, and up to 6 can come from giving back to the profession. You report PDUs in PMI's online CCRS and pay a renewal fee set by membership and region. If you miss the cycle end, the CAPM is suspended for a year and then expires.
A CAPM doesn't stay active on its own. PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program asks every CAPM holder for 15 professional development units, or PDUs, in each three-year cycle, plus a renewal fee. One PDU is one hour of qualifying learning or giving back. The cycle starts on the day you pass, and the rules below come from PMI's CCR Handbook (last updated April 2026), its Maintain page and its certification FAQ, as checked on October 27, 2026.
The CAPM renewal requirement, rule by rule
| Rule | What PMI requires for the CAPM |
|---|---|
| Cycle | 3 years, starting the day you pass the exam |
| Total | 15 PDUs |
| Education | At least 9 PDUs, with at least 2 each in Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen. No upper limit |
| Giving back to the profession | Optional, up to 6 PDUs |
| Working as a practitioner | Counts as giving back, at most 2 PDUs, claimed once per cycle |
| Carryover | PDUs above 15 earned in the final 12 months can count toward the next cycle, up to 5 |
| When activities count | Only after you earn the CAPM. The same course or activity can't be claimed twice |
| Units | 1 PDU per hour. Shorter activities count in quarter hours: 15 minutes is 0.25 |
| Renewal fee | Set by membership and region, shown in your myPMI dashboard under Renew Certification. It is separate from PMI membership dues |
The "only after you earn the CAPM" rule catches people out. The 23 hours of education you completed to qualify for the exam don't count as PDUs, even if a course listed PDUs, because you didn't hold the certification yet. The FAQ says so directly: you can start earning PDUs as soon as you earn a certification, and earlier activities don't count.
The three Talent Triangle areas, as PMI's FAQ defines them in brief: Ways of Working covers how work gets done, such as predictive, agile and design thinking approaches. Power Skills covers interpersonal skills such as collaborative leadership, communication and empathy. Business Acumen covers understanding the organization and its industry well enough to make good decisions and align projects with strategy. One education activity can be split across several areas, for example a book with chapters on agile delivery and on negotiation.
The dates that matter in a CAPM cycle
A fictional candidate, Priya, passes the CAPM on March 9, 2027. The exact dates are the ones CCRS shows her; the ones below are approximate.
| When | What happens | PMI rule behind it |
|---|---|---|
| Before March 9, 2027 | Her 23-hour exam prep course doesn't count | Activities before certification aren't eligible |
| March 9, 2027 | Her first cycle starts | The cycle begins the day you pass |
| Throughout the cycle | She reports PDUs as she earns them | Report activities as they occur |
| From about March 2029 | Extra PDUs she earns now can carry over, up to 5 | Only the final 12 months carry over |
| Once she reaches 15 | PMI emails her to pay the renewal fee, which she can do straight away | Renewal can be completed any time after the PDU requirement is met |
| About March 2030 | Her cycle ends | Report PDUs and pay before the cycle ends to stay active. The fee section adds a hard limit of 90 days after the cycle end date for payment |
| If she misses it | Suspended for 1 year | She can't use the CAPM designation, but can still finish and renew |
| A year after that | Expired | She would need a new application, the fees, and the exam again |
Two details are easy to miss. First, renewing from suspension doesn't move your next cycle: the suspension year overlaps it, so a late renewal leaves less time for the next 15 PDUs. Second, treat the 90-day payment limit as a backstop, not a plan. PMI's reporting section says to finish both steps before the cycle ends.
If you're reading this before your exam, renewal is still three years away, and you can see what CAPM prep planned for launch covers before your first cycle starts.
Ways to earn CAPM PDUs, and the proof an audit asks for
The CCR Handbook lists these activities. You don't upload documents when you report, but PMI audits a random percentage of certification holders, and you can only renew after passing an audit. The handbook says to keep documentation for at least 18 months after your cycle ends.
| Activity | Examples from PMI | Proof to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Courses or training | In-person or virtual courses, company training, educational events. Each course is reported separately, and a whole degree isn't one claim | Registration form, certificate of completion, or letter of attendance |
| Organization meetings | PMI and chapter events, professional group meetings with an educational component | Registration form, letter of attendance, or other confirmation |
| Online or digital media | Prerecorded webinars, podcasts, recordings, virtual events. PDUs from ProjectManagement.com are reported automatically if that account is linked to your PMI.org account | Notes and dates of what you studied |
| Reading | Books, articles, white papers or blogs relevant to your certification | Notes and dates of your reading |
| Informal learning | Mentoring sessions, panel discussions, lunch-and-learns | Notes and dates |
| Work as a practitioner (giving back) | Working in a role related to your certification. CAPM maximum: 2 PDUs per cycle | Proof of employment, such as a job description |
| Create content (giving back) | Writing articles, books or blogs, creating webinars or presentations | Copies of what you created |
| Give a presentation (giving back) | Presenting at an event, conference or within your organization. Preparation and delivery time both count | A copy of the presentation |
| Share knowledge (giving back) | Mentoring, teaching, coaching, serving as a subject matter expert | Notes and dates of the arrangement |
| Volunteer (giving back) | Unpaid work for organizations that aren't your employer or client, related to your certification, such as a PMI chapter | Evidence of the work, with dates |
PMI's FAQ adds that volunteering should use your practitioner skills, giving planning a project for a charity as an example. Giving-back activities don't need a Talent Triangle split; only education PDUs do.
Three ways to reach 15 CAPM PDUs
These combinations are illustrations, not recommendations of any provider. The hours must reflect what you actually did.
One PMI course. PMI's CAPM to PMP Essentials Course is listed at 15 hours and 15 PDUs: 8 Ways of Working, 5 Power Skills and 2 Business Acumen. That alone meets the 15 total, the 9-education minimum and the 2/2/2 split, as long as you complete it after you pass. PMI's new PMP exam FAQ describes it as a bridge to the PMP that earns 15 PDUs toward CAPM maintenance.
A mix of learning and giving back. For example:
| Activity | PDUs | Category or area |
|---|---|---|
| Four one-hour webinars on agile and scheduling | 4 | Education: Ways of Working |
| A book on stakeholder communication, with notes | 3 | Education: Power Skills |
| A chapter event on building a business case | 2 | Education: Business Acumen |
| Planning a fundraising event for a local charity as a volunteer | 4 | Giving back: Volunteer |
| Working in a project coordinator role | 2 | Giving back: Work as a practitioner |
| Total | 15 | Education 9 (4/3/2), giving back 6 |
Education only. Nothing requires giving back. Fifteen education PDUs work too, for example 6 Ways of Working, 5 Power Skills and 4 Business Acumen.
Whichever route you take, spread the activities across the cycle. A cycle that ends with 12 PDUs and a few weeks to go is how suspensions start.
How to report CAPM PDUs in CCRS
- Open the Continuing Certification Requirements System (CCRS). Go through "Report PDUs" on your myPMI dashboard, ccrs.pmi.org, or PMI's mobile app. It uses your PMI.org login.
- Choose the activity type and enter what the form asks for: the provider, author or host, a title, a description and the dates. For education, split the PDUs across the Talent Triangle areas.
- Submit the claim. PMI's FAQ says no supporting documents are needed at this point.
- File your proof. Keep certificates, notes and dates for at least 18 months after the cycle ends, in case of an audit.
- Pay the renewal fee when PMI's email arrives after you reach 15 PDUs. PMI then issues an updated certificate with your new cycle dates.
CCRS also shows where you are in your cycle and your PDU transcript, so check it every few months rather than once at the end.
If your CAPM cycle ends before you renew
Suspension. For 12 months you can't refer to yourself as a CAPM holder or use the designation. You can still earn the missing PDUs and complete the renewal. PMI's FAQ says PDUs earned during suspension can be used to complete the requirement. It also says holders called to active military duty, incapacitated by illness, or on maternity leave can ask Customer Care for an extension beyond the suspension date, and the CCR Handbook says other extenuating circumstances are reviewed case by case.
Expiry. If the suspension year ends without renewal, you can no longer submit PDUs, and you are no longer certified. To become active again, the handbook says you must submit a new application, pay the fees and retake the exam. That means the outline in force at the time and a new one-year eligibility period. The CAPM requirements and application guide covers the application, and if you are back at the exam stage, a 3-hour timed mock is planned for full CAPM prep, which isn't on sale yet.
An active CAPM also matters for the PMP. PMI's new PMP exam FAQ says an active CAPM covers the PMP's 35 training hours, though you still need the PMP's education and experience. The published PMP vs CAPM guide explains that path.
Older CAPMs and the 2023 exam update
If you earned your CAPM before the July 2023 exam update, PMI's 2023 FAQ says current certifications are still a valuable demonstration of your knowledge, and that the PDUs required to maintain the CAPM stay at 15. Nothing in that FAQ or the CCR Handbook asks earlier holders to retake the exam; they renew on the same rules. For holders who want the new agile and business analysis content, the FAQ pointed to PMI's Agile Hybrid Project Pro micro-credential and the PMI-PBA certification.
If you simply want to see how the newer content is organized, planned CAPM prep sorts its practice by the four 2023 domains, including agile and business analysis. This guide doesn't count exam practice as PDUs; use PMI's activity types above.
CAPM PDUs when you hold a second PMI certification
The CCR Handbook lets some PDUs count toward several certifications at once. Power Skills and Business Acumen PDUs apply to every certification you hold, and so do giving-back PDUs. Ways of Working PDUs apply to each certification whose domain the content covers, and all Ways of Working PDUs count toward the PMP. The handbook's own example is a 10-hour project management course covering risk, scheduling, business analysis and agile, which it counts as 10 Ways of Working PDUs for the CAPM.
Your next step: log in to CCRS today, note your cycle end date in your calendar with a reminder six months earlier, and pick the route above that fits your year. For the costs that come with keeping a CAPM, the CAPM exam cost guide lists what PMI publishes.
