CompTIA Security+ guideExam day and scoring

Failed Security+? Retake Rules and What to Study Next

CompTIA allows a second Security+ attempt with no wait. A third or later attempt needs 14 calendar days. Then study the domains you missed, not a guessed reason.

Short answer

CompTIA’s retake policy does not make you wait between a first and second attempt. Before a third or any later attempt you must wait at least 14 calendar days from the last attempt. You pay the exam price each time. There is no free retake. A failed attempt does not reveal a single cause, so the next study block should come from the domains you could not answer, not from a story about effort.

The waiting rule is about the attempt number

CompTIA’s retake policy, as published for its certification exams, works like this:

Attempt you wantWait
Second attempt after a first failureNo required waiting period
Third attempt, or any attempt after thatAt least 14 calendar days after the most recent attempt

You buy the exam again. The policy says there is no free retest and no retake discount. A passing result on an exam code cannot be retaken unless CompTIA agrees. The score you needed was 750 on the 100–900 scale, explained in what 750 means.

If the English SY0-701 exam retires on June 11, 2027 before you can sit again, the retake clock does not extend that retirement. Check the date in the version guide before you buy another voucher.

What to study next

A failed report does not say “you failed because you skipped practice.” It also does not name one hidden weakness for you. Use the evidence you do have.

  1. Write down the domains that felt unstable while you were in the item, if you can remember them without trying to reconstruct the questions. Do not write down exam prompts. Do not look up recalled items.
  2. If you cannot remember a domain, start from the two largest SY0-701 weights: Security Operations at 28% and Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Mitigations at 22%. That is a priority, not a diagnosis.
  3. For each miss you can describe in your own words, label it as vocabulary, a control that did not match the scenario, or pacing. Those three have different fixes.
  4. Rebuild a short week from the study guide instead of repeating the same full read.

Practice the Security+ domain that felt weakest if you want original items aimed at a gap. The set will not tell you why the official attempt ended below 750, and it will not estimate the next scaled score.

What not to do in the gap

Do not buy a dump of “real questions.” Those are not a study method, and they are not something this site will imitate. Do not assume the second form is the first form with the numbers changed. Do not schedule a third attempt on day 13.
