HESI A2 Vocabulary: What to Know and How to Study It
Elsevier’s HESI A2 Vocabulary and General Knowledge exam uses words from healthcare and general settings. Passy examples are original study material, not an official word list.

HESI A2 vocabulary, when assigned, is Elsevier’s Vocabulary and General Knowledge exam: words used in healthcare and general settings. There is no legitimate public “official list of exact HESI words” that Passy can republish. Study by learning precise meanings, stems, and commonly confused pairs. Treat every word list you see online as unofficial unless Elsevier published it.
There is no official Passy deck of “the HESI words”
Elsevier describes Vocabulary and General Knowledge as words used in healthcare and general settings, with 50 scored items and about 50 minutes when the exam is administered. Current sixth-edition review materials include a vocabulary chapter. None of that is a permission slip to paste a pirated Quizlet as if it were Elsevier’s key. Practice precise HESI A2 word meanings in Passy using original items, then keep a personal notebook of words you miss.
A study method that matches the published job
Context first. A healthcare sentence often selects a directional or clinical meaning (“proximal to the elbow”) rather than a casual synonym.
One precise definition. If two options both “kind of fit,” the exam-style choice is usually the tighter fit.
Word families. Prefixes and roots (hyper-, hypo-, -itis) are useful when they are taught as meaning, not as a magic decoder ring for every item.
Confused pairs. Affect/effect, discrete/discreet, and similar pairs belong to English usage; some also appear near Grammar. If Grammar is assigned, do not double-count the same week as two full courses—coordinate with the study guide.
Passy’s mixed preview uses an original proximal/distal item as a learning example. It is not a recalled exam question.
How vocabulary sits next to reading and A&P
Reading Comprehension, in Elsevier’s description, includes understanding words in context inside health-related scenarios. That is a passage skill. Vocabulary is a word-knowledge exam. Study them as neighbors, not clones. See HESI A2 Reading Comprehension.
