ServSafe Manager Certificate Expiring in 2027? How to Recertify
Certified in 2022? Your ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate may expire in 2027. See how recertification works, the retest limits that apply, when to schedule, and what the current exam materials cover that a 2022 study plan may have missed.
Short answer
ServSafe says the Food Protection Manager certificate is valid for 5 years, so a certificate earned in 2022 generally expires in 2027. Check the date on yours, because local rules can differ. There's no renewal form: ServSafe's retest policy lets you retest when your current certification is expiring, which means buying a new exam and passing it again under a registered proctor, with at least 56 of the 80 scored questions correct (70%). The usual limits apply: two attempts within 30 days, a 60-day wait before a third, and no more than four in 12 months. Your jurisdiction may also require training.
Check the date on your certificate first
ServSafe's validity article, checked October 27, 2026, says the Food Protection Manager certification is valid for 5 years and that this may vary by state or local regulation. A certificate from spring 2022 therefore generally runs out in spring 2027, but the date printed on your certificate, and your health department's rule, are what count. Download a copy from your ServSafe account if you can't find the paper one.
Two clocks people mix up:
| Clock | Length |
|---|---|
| ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate | 5 years, unless your jurisdiction says otherwise |
| ServSafe Food Handler, Alcohol, and Allergens certificates | 3 years |
If your employer issued you a food handler card as well, it's on a different schedule. The certification length guide covers both.
How ServSafe recertification works
There's no "renew" button. ServSafe's answer on recertification says you become certified by passing the ServSafe Manager Certification Exam with 70% or higher, and that your local requirements may include food safety training as well as the exam. Its retest policy lists an expiring certification as one of the two situations in which you may retest.
| What you need | What ServSafe says |
|---|---|
| A new exam | An exam answer sheet for a print exam, or an exam access code for an online exam |
| A proctor | All retests are proctored by a registered ServSafe proctor |
| A passing score | 70% or higher, at least 56 of the 80 scored questions |
| Attempt limits | Two attempts within 30 days with no wait; a third needs at least 60 days after the last; no more than four in 12 months |
You can take the exam online with ProctorU, at a Pearson VUE testing center, or with a class; the certification steps guide compares the options.
When to schedule your 2027 exam
Work backward from the expiration date:
- Ask your health department whether a lapsed certificate is a problem for your role. Under the Food Code, the person in charge is expected to be a certified food protection manager, so a gap can matter where that rule is adopted.
- Book a first attempt early enough that a second still fits. ServSafe allows a second attempt within 30 days with no wait, so testing several weeks before expiration leaves room for one retry.
- Check what the new certificate says. Its dates come from ServSafe; confirm them when you print it rather than assuming how they're calculated.
- Give your employer the new copy as soon as you have it.
If you fail twice, the third attempt needs a 60-day wait, which is the main reason not to leave recertification to the last week. The retake guide has the details.
What has changed since you studied in 2022
The exam you take in 2027 follows newer materials than many 2022 candidates used. ServSafe's update page says its content follows the Supplement to the 2022 FDA Food Code, released in November 2024, plus 2025 content blueprint updates, and that the 9th-edition Manager book includes all of it. ServSafe issued 2022 Food Code update sheets for the 7th and 8th edition coursebooks.
Topics worth reviewing even if you passed easily five years ago:
- Sesame. FDA says sesame became the ninth major food allergen on January 1, 2023. A 2022 study sheet may list eight. See the allergens guide.
- Written allergen notices and cross-contact corrective action, which the 9th-edition book description highlights.
- Food safety management systems, active managerial control, and the seven HACCP principles, an expanded focus in the 9th edition. See the HACCP guide.
- Food defense, employee training, and inspections, also expanded in the 9th edition.
- Holding food without temperature control and refilling returnable containers, listed as revised requirements.
- Disinfectants and Safety Data Sheets, listed as new chemical-safety requirements.
FDA's 2026 Food Code isn't on ServSafe's update page yet. The ServSafe Manager 2027 guide explains what that means for a 2027 exam. To see how much of this you still know, take a mixed ServSafe Manager practice set before you plan your review.
A two-week refresher for experienced managers
If you work in a kitchen every day, you probably don't need to relearn everything. A sample plan:
| Days | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Take a mixed practice set cold; list every topic you miss |
| 2–4 | The topics above that are new since 2022 |
| 5–8 | Your misses from day 1, especially exact numbers and exceptions |
| 9–10 | Temperatures, cooling, and employee illness, where small details decide answers |
| 11–13 | Mixed timed sets; review only the guesses and the misses |
| 14 | Light review, then rest before the exam |
After the day-1 set, focus your review on the topics you miss. Experience helps on the floor, but exam questions reward the exact rule.
