ServSafe Manager guideExam and certification
How Long Does ServSafe Manager Certification Last?
ServSafe says the Food Protection Manager certificate is valid for 5 years, and a local rule can differ. A course login expires on a different clock.
Short answer
ServSafe says the Food Protection Manager certification is valid for 5 years and that state or local rules can differ. That is not the same clock as an online course. Unused courses last one year from purchase, and a manager course that has been started must be finished in 90 days. Passy does not renew certificates or look up your official status.
The certificate and the course login are different
ServSafe’s validity article, checked October 3, 2026, lists the Food Protection Manager certification at 5 years and says the period may vary by state or local regulation. The same article lists the Food Handler, Alcohol, Allergens, and Workplace certificates at 3 years, also with local exceptions. Do not apply the 3-year line to a manager card, or the 5-year line to a food-handler card.
The passing-score FAQ page also answers “Do online courses expire?”:
| Clock | What ServSafe says |
|---|---|
| Manager certificate | 5 years, unless a jurisdiction says otherwise |
| Unused online course | 1 year from purchase |
| Manager or alcohol course after you start it | Finish within 90 days |
| Food Handler course after you start it | Finish within 60 days |
| After a course expires | You cannot open that course. ServSafe says you buy a new one. Expiration dates are not extended, and online courses are not refundable. |
Finishing the course does not by itself print the certificate. You still need a passing proctored exam, unless your jurisdiction’s path says otherwise. Passing the exam does not renew a course login you already let expire.
How renewal actually works
ServSafe’s retest policy says you may retest when the current certification is expiring, under the same attempt limits as a failed exam. That means another proctored exam, another access code or answer sheet, and the 30-day and 60-day rules on the retake page. There is not a “click renew” step on Passy.
Before you rely on the 5-year date, check the health department where you work. ServSafe points readers to local regulations for that reason. An employer can also ask for a current card sooner than the printed date.
Your score and certificate, when ServSafe has issued them, are on your ServSafe account. Passy cannot see that account and cannot extend it.
