Failed the ServSafe Manager Exam? Retake Rules and Next Steps
ServSafe allows two manager attempts in 30 days, then a 60-day wait, and no more than four attempts in 12 months. A new attempt needs a new code or answer sheet.
Short answer
ServSafe’s manager retest policy says you may test twice within 30 days with no required wait between those two attempts. A third attempt must wait at least 60 days from the last attempt. No more than four attempts are allowed in a 12-month period. Every retest is proctored. A print retest needs an exam answer sheet, and an online retest needs a new exam access code.
The attempt clock ServSafe published
The Knowledge Center article, checked October 3, 2026, allows a retest if you did not pass or if your current certification is expiring. The limits are:
| Attempt | Rule ServSafe states |
|---|---|
| First and second | Two exams inside 30 days, with no required wait between them |
| Third or later | Wait at least 60 days from the last attempt |
| Cap | No more than four attempts in a 12-month period |
ServSafe’s own example is: first attempt June 1, second attempt June 2, third attempt August 2, fourth attempt October 2. August 2 is 61 days after June 2, which satisfies “at least 60 days.” If your second attempt is not June 2, do not copy those calendar dates. Count 60 days from your last attempt.
An online-proctor instruction page states the same pattern in slightly shorter words: two attempts in a 30-day period, then at least 60 days between later attempts, and no more than four in 12 months.
What you buy for the next sitting
The access-code product says a failed exam needs another code. The Knowledge Center adds the format split: print exams need an exam answer sheet, and online exams need an exam access code. A registered ServSafe proctor still has to give the exam. Passy cannot schedule it.
The cost page lists the code and the online-proctor prices checked on October 3, 2026. Those prices are not a retake discount.
Change the study, not the story
A fail does not come with a public explanation of which items you missed. You can still sort the practice you do control.
- List the questions you guessed. Name the skill: cooling, cooking temperature, allergen, exclusion, or sanitizer.
- Redo one item of that type without the rationale.
- Stop adding new topics until that item is stable.
Review the kind of miss you can already name. That review is not a new official score and it does not shorten the 60-day wait.
The timeline above is ServSafe’s example, not a personal calendar. If your dates differ, write them down before you book.
