ServSafe Manager Passing Score: What You Need to Pass
The current ServSafe answer is 70 percent, at least 56 of 80 scored questions. The exam still has 90 questions because 10 are pilot items.
Short answer
ServSafe’s current passing-score answer says you need 70 percent or higher, which it defines as at least 56 of 80 scored questions. The exam has 90 questions because 10 are pilot questions for research and are not part of that 80. A copyright-2020 examinee handbook still says 75 percent. That older sentence is not the rule this page uses.
Use 80 as the denominator
The FAQ page is titled with the old phrase “a passing score is 75 or higher.” The answer on that page, read October 3, 2026, says something else:
A passing score is 70% or higher. This is obtained by answering at least 56 out of 80 questions correctly. The exam has 90 questions; however there are 10 pilot questions that are for research purposes only.
The arithmetic is 0.70 × 80 = 56. You cannot see which 10 of the 90 are the pilot items, so you still answer all 90. Only 80 count toward the 56.
| Calculation | Result | Why it misleads |
|---|---|---|
| 70% of 80 | 56 | This is the current ServSafe answer. |
| 75% of 80 | 60 | This is the old percent on the current denominator. |
| 70% of 90 | 63 | This treats pilot items as scored. |
| 75% of 90 | 67.5 | This mixes the old percent with the wrong count. |
The downloadable examinee handbook still on ServSafe’s site is marked ©2020 and says “a passing score is 75 percent or better.” It agrees that there are 90 questions and a two-hour exam. It does not agree with the live FAQ on the percent. When those two ServSafe documents conflict, this page follows the live FAQ, not the 2020 PDF.
What a practice percentage is not
A score of 14 out of 20 on Passy’s sample is 70 percent of this free set. It is not 56 out of 80, and the items are not ServSafe’s. Use a miss to see which limit you swapped. Do not convert that fraction into “I would have passed.”
If the official result is not a pass, the next rule is the retake policy, not a second guess at the percent. The retake guide has the attempt limits ServSafe published.
