ServSafe Manager vs Food Handler: Which Do You Need?
Manager certification and the Food Handler assessment are different ServSafe products. The job and the local health rule decide which one you need.
Short answer
ServSafe sells the Food Protection Manager certification and the Food Handler assessment as different products. The manager certificate is generally valid for 5 years and the food-handler certificate for 3 years, and ServSafe says either period can change under a state or local rule. Ask the employer and the local health authority which credential the job requires. This page does not tell every reader to buy the manager exam.
Compare the credential, not the brand name
Both names sit on ServSafe’s site. They are not two lengths of the same card.
| Question | Food Protection Manager | Food Handler |
|---|---|---|
| What ServSafe calls the result | Food Protection Manager Certification | Food Handler Certificate |
| Validity ServSafe states | 5 years, and a jurisdiction can differ | 3 years, and a state can differ |
| Who it is for | A person who will manage food safety, when the job or the law asks for a certified manager | A person handling food, when that assessment is what the workplace wants |
| Retake article | Manager retest policy, with attempt limits | A separate food-handler retake article |
This table uses ServSafe’s certificate-validity article, checked October 3, 2026. It does not copy a food-handler question count, because that count was not in the manager sources used for this launch. Do not assume the 90-question, 56-of-80 manager rule applies to the handler assessment.
What to verify before you pay
- Read the job posting or ask the manager which card the shift requires.
- Check the local health department, because ServSafe says validity and acceptance can vary.
- If the answer is “manager,” the cost guide separates an exam code from proctoring and from a course.
- If the answer is “food handler,” stay on ServSafe’s Food Handler pages. This Passy vertical does not launch a Food Handler exam.
Alcohol service, allergen training, and workplace courses are further products. None of them is automatically included when you buy a manager exam code.
Passing a manager exam is not the same as finishing a required training course, and neither one is the same as a local permit for the restaurant. Ohio’s note on ServSafe’s exam-access-code page is one example: that state asks for an application and a record of training in addition to the exam. It is not a national extra step.
Passy practice does not choose the product for you and does not satisfy a training hour requirement.
