SHRM-CP Recertification: When Your Credential Expires and How to Earn 60 PDCs
The SHRM-CP lasts one three-year cycle, ending on the last day of your birth month. Here is how to find your own end date, what recertifying costs, which PDC options suit an early-career budget, what SHRM's documents disagree on, and what happens if you miss the date.
Short answer
The SHRM-CP is valid for a three-year cycle that starts the day you pass and ends three years later on the last day of your birth month. To keep it, earn 60 professional development credits (PDCs) in that cycle and pay $165 as a SHRM member or $210 as a nonmember, or retest at the SHRM-CP level in the cycle's last 12 months. A 60-day grace period follows the end date, with fees of $240 or $285; after it, the certification is revoked. Up to 20 extra credits carry over.
Passing the SHRM-CP doesn't give you the letters for life. It gives you one three-year cycle, and the end of that cycle is set by two dates you already know: the day you passed and the month you were born. Most of the work of recertifying is knowing that end date early and spreading 60 credits across three years so nothing lands in the last month. The rules below come from SHRM's recertification page, the SHRM Recertification Handbook (PDF created January 2026) and the 2026 SHRM Certification Handbook, checked on October 27, 2026.
When your SHRM-CP expires
Your first cycle begins the day you pass and ends three years later, on the last day of your birth month. SHRM gives two examples, and a third shows a pass in the current window:
| Passed on | Birth month | Cycle end date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| June 1, 2024 | December | December 31, 2027 | SHRM staff article, September 2024 |
| May 3, 2025 | July | July 31, 2028 (revoked September 30, 2028 if not completed) | SHRM recertification page |
| January 15, 2027 | April | April 30, 2030 | Passy's example, same rule |
After the end date comes a 60-day grace period, then expiration. Every example SHRM publishes has a birth month later in the year than the pass date; if yours comes earlier in the year, confirm the end date shown in your SHRM Certification Portal rather than working it out yourself.
Three more timing rules:
- You can recertify early. Once you are one year into your cycle and have 60 PDCs, the portal invites you to submit.
- Each new cycle begins the day after you recertify. The Recertification Handbook's example runs the next cycle to the birth month three years on.
- Stop using the letters if it lapses. The certification handbook says to discontinue the designation immediately once a certification has expired.
If you are still preparing for the exam, none of this starts until you pass. Passy practice isn't a SHRM recertification activity and earns no PDCs, but if you want to check the planned SHRM-CP prep, which targets the exam itself, its access periods and prices are listed now, with checkout not yet open.
What SHRM-CP recertification costs
| Route | SHRM member | Nonmember |
|---|---|---|
| PDCs, submitted by your end date | $165 | $210 |
| PDCs, submitted in the 60-day grace period | $240 | $285 |
| Retesting at the SHRM-CP level | Full exam fee: $399 standard | $499 standard |
Fees for the PDC route are nonrefundable and nontransferable, and the processing fee applies only to that route. The SHRM pages checked list no coupon codes for the recertification fee; the published saving is the member rate, $45 lower. Retired status is a separate, one-time $200 fee. The cost of the credits themselves depends on the activities you choose, which is where the real budget sits.
Where 60 PDCs come from early in an HR career
Every activity must relate to the behavioral competencies or HR knowledge in the SHRM BASK, and it must fall inside your cycle dates. SHRM groups activities into three categories:
| Category | Cap per cycle | Examples and values SHRM lists |
|---|---|---|
| Advance Your Education | No maximum | Conferences, seminars, webcasts, podcasts and e-learning at 0.25 PDC per 15 minutes; 1 IACET CEU = 10 PDCs; a semester credit hour = 15 PDCs (trimester 12, quarter 10, audited or noncredit 10); a BASK-aligned book plus a written summary = 3 PDCs; chapter programs |
| Advance Your Organization | 30 | A supervisor-endorsed work project: 10 PDCs for 40+ hours, 20 for 80+ hours, 30 for 120+ hours, with a write-up on the portal's template |
| Advance Your Profession | 30 | Presenting (2 PDCs per hour, including preparation), publishing, volunteering (for example, 5 PDCs a year on a SHRM chapter committee), formal HR mentoring, professional memberships |
SHRM's recertification page adds typical ranges for its own offerings: webinars at 1 PDC each, e-learning at 1 to 5, podcasts at 1 to 2, educational programs at 7.5 to 36 and conferences at 20 or more. For SHRM Specialty Credentials it gives 13.5 to 26 PDCs, while the qualifying activities page says 17 to 26 per program, so check the value attached to the specific credential.
SHRM membership: 3 or 10 PDCs a year?
SHRM's documents disagree. The recertification page and the qualifying activities page list SHRM or professional membership at 3 PDCs a year, while the January 2026 Recertification Handbook lists SHRM membership at 10 PDCs a year, up to 30, and keeps other HR memberships at 3 a year, up to 9. The certification handbook places professional membership in Advance Your Profession, which is capped at 30 PDCs per cycle either way. Membership credits upload after a full year of membership when you use the same single sign-on for membership and the portal. Plan on the lower figure and treat anything more as a bonus.
Two sample SHRM-CP plans without counting membership
Passy's arithmetic, using SHRM's published values:
| Plan | Activities | PDCs |
|---|---|---|
| Student or recent graduate | One 3-credit semester course from an accredited school, graded C or better (45), two BASK-aligned books with summaries (6), nine webinars (9) | 60 |
| Working HR generalist | One supervisor-endorsed project of 80+ hours (20), two years on a SHRM chapter committee (10), three books with summaries (9), 21 webinars (21) | 60 |
Both stay inside the caps, and neither depends on which membership figure is right. The first fits anyone who passed the SHRM-CP while still in school, a route the guide to the SHRM-CP with no HR experience describes. If you live outside the U.S., memberships in HR bodies such as CPHR Canada or IHRP Singapore count too, and the guide to taking the SHRM-CP outside the U.S. notes what else can differ.
Are there free SHRM-CP PDCs?
Some, by SHRM's own description. A September 2024 SHRM staff article on sustaining your credential says some qualifying activities may be free of charge but most require fees, and that fee-based activities usually cost SHRM members less. SHRM's pages don't publish a list of free activities. Several of the activities SHRM lists, though, are earned through your own work rather than by enrolling in a program: supervisor-endorsed work projects, presenting, writing published by a third party, volunteering, formal mentoring, SHRM surveys and focus groups (0.25 PDC per 15 minutes), and exam-development volunteering such as a knowledge item writing workshop (15 PDCs). A work project you are already assigned can be worth up to 30 of your 60.
Recording SHRM-CP PDCs so a review doesn't cost you the credential
- Log activities as they finish. In the SHRM Certification Portal, choose Add PDCs and enter an activity code if you have one, or pick a category and describe the activity. You can record an activity only after it ends.
- Use one login. SHRM-sponsored events and membership credits upload automatically only when the portal and your SHRM account share the same single sign-on. Activities from chapters and other providers you enter yourself.
- Keep the evidence. SHRM runs random verification reviews of completed records and recommends keeping documentation for six months after your cycle ends: agendas or certificates, transcripts, the work-project summary, slides or published links, and membership cards. Failing a review can lead to revocation.
- Track everything above 60. Up to 20 extra credits carry over into your next cycle, in the Advance Your Education category.
About four weeks after you recertify, SHRM emails a digital copy of your certificate.
Recertifying by retaking the SHRM-CP
The second route is to pass the exam again. SHRM's conditions:
- Timing: no earlier than 12 months before your cycle ends.
- Level: your current level, so a SHRM-CP holder retakes the SHRM-CP.
- Process: SHRM's page says to contact it before you apply; then you complete a normal application and pay the full exam fee.
- Risk: if you don't pass, the certification is revoked, you must reapply and pass as a new candidate, and you can no longer recertify with PDCs.
On fees alone, the exam route costs more than the $165 or $210 processing fee and carries a real risk. It suits a holder who would rather sit one exam than track credits for three years. If you choose it, the 1,800 planned SHRM-CP questions with an explanation for every answer are one way to prepare once full prep launches, and the SHRM-CP exam format guide covers what the exam looks like now.
Missed dates, hardship and a move to the SHRM-SCP
- Late but within 60 days. Complete your PDCs and submit with the late fee. SHRM's page says the fee rises by $75 in the grace period, and the certification is revoked at its end.
- Hardship extension. For illness, a family member's illness, long-term unemployment or military deployment, among other hardships, submit the hardship form in the portal's My Resources section at least 30 days before your end date, but not before the final year of the cycle. An approved extension can last up to 12 months.
- Disability. The certification handbook says holders with a documented medical condition that qualifies as a disability under the ADA may be eligible for an extension; contact shrmcertification@shrm.org.
- Expired. A holder who misses the grace period loses the certification and regains it by reapplying as a new candidate. The Recertification Handbook also describes a reinstatement request for expired holders who meet the eligibility criteria, with the fee listed on the form.
- Outside the U.S. The certification handbook notes that requirements may differ for holders outside the U.S.
- Moving up to the SHRM-SCP. Holding the SHRM-CP for three years, plus work in or a move into a strategic role, is one route to the SCP. SHRM's recertification documents don't say how an open SHRM-CP cycle is handled when you later earn the SCP; ask recertification@shrm.org. The SHRM-CP vs. SHRM-SCP guide covers the move, and the SHRM-SCP recertification guide lists the PDC options that suit senior work.
Your next step for SHRM-CP recertification
Open your portal, write down your end date, and put a reminder one year before it, which is both the start of the retest window and the last comfortable moment to fix a shortfall. Then sketch your own version of one of the sample plans above. If you are still a candidate, the SHRM-CP exam cost guide shows how membership and recertification fees fit your total, and you can rehearse a retest or a first attempt with the planned SHRM-CP mock exam once prep opens.
