Can You Retake the HESI A2? Retake Rules Explained
HESI A2 retake limits, waiting periods, and which score a school uses are program rules. Elsevier notes multiple exam versions exist for repeat assessment.
Short answer
Whether you can retake the HESI A2, how long you must wait, how many attempts count, and which score is kept are decisions your nursing or healthcare program publishes. Elsevier’s A2 scientific-evidence paper notes that multiple versions of each exam are available if repeated assessment is needed. That is not the same as a national 60-day rule. Read the current attempt policy for every application before you schedule another sitting.
Elsevier can offer another version. The school decides whether you may sit it.
A forum rule such as “everyone waits 60 days and gets three tries a year” is usually one institution’s policy copied as folklore. Elsevier’s 2022 paper says multiple versions of each exam are available if repeated assessment is needed, and that applicants can use remediation content before repeat testing. Your right to use those versions is still a program rule. After you know that rule, rebuild HESI A2 practice around the assigned exams that missed the cutoff in Passy.
What to copy from the current admissions page
Record, in writing:
- maximum attempts in the application cycle or calendar year
- required wait between sittings
- whether you must retake every academic exam or only the ones below a floor
- whether the school uses the highest, latest, or first score
- whether a second version is required
- extra fees (cost)
- whether the new score must arrive before a deadline
If two schools disagree, the stricter wait still matters if you want both applications alive.
Passing score is the floor you missed. Results is where the first report should be.
Change the study, not only the date
Elsevier mentions remediation content after an attempt. Use it if your Evolve course offers it. Also name the method behind each miss: conversion setup, inference, grammar subject, A&P system. Scheduling another appointment without that diagnosis repeats the same sitting.
Registration for a second attempt still follows the school’s pathway, including any version label they require.

When waiting is the correct next step
If the school’s interval has not elapsed, extra unofficial quizzes will not shorten it. Use the calendar. Protect sleep. Do not create a second Evolve account to “reset” an attempt counter; identity mismatches delay results.
If the published floor is already met and the program is not ranking by HESI, another sitting may be unnecessary.
When the wait is real, keep a lighter mixed HESI A2 rhythm in Passy so the second attempt is not a cram.
Paying for a date you are not ready to use is a common expensive mistake.
