ServSafe Manager guideExam and certification
Can You Take the ServSafe Manager Exam Online?
Yes, with ServSafe’s online proctor, a computer, and an exam access code. An online course is not that exam, and the instructions do not describe an open-book test.
Short answer
ServSafe sells a manager exam with online proctoring. You need a computer with a webcam and microphone, a private clean desk, a government or school photo ID, and an exam access code. The exam itself is 2 hours. ServSafe tells you to allow about 2.5 hours including launch. The instructions do not describe the exam as open-book. An online course is a separate product.
An online course is not the online exam
ServSafe lists at least three different things people call “online”:
| Purchase | What you get | What you still need |
|---|---|---|
| Online course | Lessons. The current bundle description says an 8-hour course. | A proctored exam if you want the certificate |
| Exam access code | One attempt code. Current price is on the cost page. | A registered ServSafe proctor. ServSafe says extra fees can apply. |
| Exam with online proctor | The exam plus ProctorU proctoring | A supported computer, webcam, mic, and a suitable room |
The online-proctor product page says mobile phones, tablets, and Chromebooks are not supported. It also says to check that an online exam is accepted where you work. Passy does not make that local call.
What the proctored session requires
ServSafe’s Online Proctor Exam Instructions, checked October 3, 2026, say:
- Schedule in ProctorU. Allow about 2.5 hours so launch plus the exam both fit.
- Proctoring is included when you schedule more than 72 hours ahead. Sooner sessions can add a ProctorU fee: $8 for 24 to 72 hours ahead, and $12 for less than 24 hours ahead, on that instruction page.
- Use a private location and a clean desk. Do not sit on a couch. Remove headphones, non-religious headwear, and smartwatches.
- Have a government-issued or school photo ID.
- The proctor uses your screen, camera, and microphone.
- The exam clock is 2 hours. Launch steps do not count against those 2 hours.
- The access code for this path starts with SSMPU. The proctor can let you open email to paste it.
Those instructions do not say you may use a book, notes, or a phone as a reference. A clean desk, a watched screen, and a ban on smartwatches are the opposite of an open-book setup. The separate ProctorU pages linked from ServSafe list unpermitted locations and behaviors. Read those before you treat a forum post as the rule.
Official scheduling starts at ServSafe’s online proctor instructions and ProctorU’s ServSafe scheduling page. Those links are the booking path. They are not Passy pages.
A class exam with a registered proctor in the room is the other legal path. It uses an access code or a print answer sheet, and it is still proctored. The retake rules apply to another attempt either way.
